SomeKindaWonderful released their debut self-titled album in June and since then, the band has been moving faster than ever. Their fast-rising single “Reverse” cracked the Top 20 on the alternative chart this summer. The single certainly has been resonating with fans across the country and radio waves where it’s been getting big spins nationwide. at over 40 stations.
Guitarist Matt Gibson took some time to chat with us at All Access about “Reverse,” their upcoming tour and how SomeKindaWonderful got started!
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions for me. I saw you guys perform here in Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater and loved your show! For the review of that show, check out: SomeKindaWonderful Concert Review
One of the first things I noticed was your awesome group dynamic on stage. How that been something you guys have had to develop over time?
I guess a little bit… We are definitely a more powerful, cohesive unit now than when we played our first show but we never made any conscious efforts to do so. We all just are so passionate about what we are playing, and we love being on stage, so I guess that passion reflects in our show
Can you explain where your band name came from? And what is the significance of the butterflies?
Shortly after me, Jordy, and Ben formed the band, Jordy dreamt the word “wonderful,” which we all loved for a name. Then we were kicking around the phrase “SomeKindaWonderful” (like the song and movie), we searched “#somekindawonderful”and saw that it was filled with a lot of beautiful, special moments… like a young couple together, or a beautiful sky, or a baby. We liked the idea of associating ourselves with such positive and wonderful things.
As for the butterfly’s significance… we as people spend so much time developing and growing until we hopefully reach our maturation and can flourish as we were meant to; much like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. We like to think that musically, this band is us growing into what we were meant to be.
How’s your summer tour been going? Any favorite venues/crowds yet?
Touring this summer has been unreal, its been great to see so much of the country and meet our fans. I would have to say that Summerfest in Milwaukee definitely stands out in my mind as being extra fun.
What is your favorite song on your debut album? Your favorite song to perform?
Hmmmm… that’s a really rough question. It’s like asking a parent which of their 12 kids is their favorite LOL. My favorite song on the album is always changing but at this moment I’d probably have to say “Honeymoon” or maybe “In Chains”.
Who are some of your musical influences? Who are some of the new artists who inspire you?
My favorite band of all time is and has always been The Beatles. I love classic rock and blues, mainly stuff from the 60s. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Santana, Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon… those are my favorite artists. I also like old Blues stuff like Robert Johnson and Son House. What inspires me in other musicians is raw emotion – blood sweat and tears through music.
If you had the opportunity to work with any artist/band living or dead, who would it be and why?
Like I said, my favorite band is The Beatles, so that’s who I would have to choose to work with. Preferably during the Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper, or Let It Be periods. I love how they never limited themselves to anything… They would mix and match all these instruments, sounds, and styles more than others were in that day, which is definitely something we aspire to do.
When you aren’t performing and/or writing new material, what do you like to do in your spare time? Where do you live when you aren’t touring?
When I’m not touring I live in Fairview Park, OH (a suburb of Cleveland) with my wife and 2 dogs. I’m probably not the most interesting dude in the world… other than making music (which I spend probably 75% of my free time doing) I just like to chill and watch HBO series lol.
What do you hope fans take away from your debut album?
I just hope it touches them in some way. I want the music we make to be the soundtrack to people’s lives…
What’s next up for SomeKindawonderful?
Well…. we actually have a tour coming up with New Politics and Bad Suns, mid October til the end of November.
We’re hitting a TON of cities so definitely check SomeKindaWonderful.com to see when we are coming to your town. Also, we recently completed our official music video for “Reverse” and we couldn’t be happier with the result. It will be released very very soon so stay tuned!
