From October 26th to December 2nd, LA’s Rockwell Table & Stage is the home for the “Unauthorized Musical Parody of Stranger Things.”
This All Access writer attended this fun-filled production last weekend. Filled to the capacity, the audience even included a few stars from the hit film, Pitch Perfect. These ladies were there to support their friend and one of the stars of the show, Kelley Jakle.
Fans of 80’s music and the Netflix horror series Stranger Things will be absolutely delighted with this show. The cast acts out season 1 using popular 80s tracks and lampooning 80s horror tropes. Some of the tunes heard during the show were “Poison” by Bell Biv DeVoe, “She Works Hard For The Money” by Donna Summer, “Call Me” by Blondie, ‘Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper and many many others.
The actors perform all over the restaurant and attendees may even be asked to get up from their chair or get on stage.
Set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the critically acclaimed Netflix series focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amidst supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a peculiar girl with psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy’s friends in their own search. Rockwell brings to life the Duffer
Brothers’ mix of investigative drama, supernatural elements, and 80s nostalgia, with a diverse cast, live band, and a spate of pop songs from that era sure to thrill audiences.
In an exciting new twist, the show borrows from the beloved Choose Your Own Adventure series of books, with the audience rolling oversize dice during the show to determine the fate of the Stranger Things kids. This guarantees a new and exciting performance with constant twists and surprises for both audience and cast, as they ride the nostalgia wave to the “Upside Down” and back.
The show’s supernaturally talented cast includes Tony award-winner and Celebrity Big Brother winner Marissa Jaret Winokur, Eric Petersen (TV Land’s Kirstie and School of Rock on Broadway), Emma Hunton (Freeform’s upcoming Good Trouble and Elphaba in Wicked), and Garrett Clayton (King Cobra, Hairspray Live! on NBC, and Disney’s Teen Beach Party).
When asked about creating this world, writer/executive producer, Kate Pazakis explains, “We always try and merge movies and musical theatre, and love revisiting and retooling popular films and series for the live audience.” Adding, “Our live band and slew of hit pop songs develop this cult classic story in a way that UMPO Rockwell audiences have come to expect – a night of great talent, entertainment and laughter!”
