Meet SketchShe- Shae-Lee, Lana and Madison! They are three Australian models turned comedy YouTube stars. In their first video, they lip-synced to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” in their car. The video has now reached over 24 million views!
In their latest video, they’re throwing it back to the ‘80’s with their new video “U Can’t Touch This!” by MC SketchShe.” The video follows them from the car to a golf cart. Maneuvering through the back nine of a golf course, nailing dance moves, avoiding flying golf balls and wreaking havoc along the way…all while wearing shoulder pads and hammer pants!
“We had no idea it would have such an incredible response. The fact that we’ve had people writing to us from around the world… I don’t think there’s been a country or continent that hasn’t reached out and written to us to say they loved it.”
Learn more about SketchShe in the following All Access interview with them:
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer a few questions for All Access! Where does this interview find you all today? Generally, what’s a typical day like for you now?
Today we are up to our armpits in 80’s fashion at the costume hire shop! That’s a little hint for the next video maybe?
A typical day for SketchShe has become quite unpredictable. Usually, it involves preparing and planning our next video, brainstorming sketch ideas, numerous Skype meetings and a few coffee breaks.
How did the three of you first meet? Were you all modeling together?
Shae and Lana met on a modeling job two years ago and discovered they shared the same wicked sense of humor and a mutual love for writing and sketch comedy! I [Madison] started an instant friendship with Lana a year later and between the three of us, SketchShe was born! Since the threesome banded together it has been constant goofing, dress ups and laughter [the best of which was caught on camera and made into sketches!]
How did you first come up with idea to make these videos?
For the last year we had been making female driven [pun intended] sketch comedy and had actually collated our videos to create a TV show pilot! Up until this year we had funded all of the projects ourselves… it was when the funds started to get low that we came up with “Bohemian CARsody”! It was virtually free, easy for us to film and something that we felt was fun and relatable [and hey, air guitar is always a winner!]
How did you pick Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” for your first original video?
It’s such an epic classic-rockout-anthem with great lyrics to lip-sync and act out in the car…not to mention the guitar solo! It’s a universal song and we’re big Queen fans so it seemed a great choice.
I read that after you posted the video, the Queen guitarist, Brian May contacted you girls! What was that like?!
Yes! He shared our video on his Facebook page. That felt awesome, like a friendly seal of approval from Queen themselves, it definitely silenced the ‘you’ve ruined the song’ comments too. Next on the agenda is to to get Brian in one of our videos!
What was it like being on Ellen? What about Good Morning America?
Surreal. Lana and I (Madison) had never been to the USA. So to appear on both shows in our first week was incredible! Ellen was SketchShe’s first ever interview and live performance but we were surprisingly calm and just really excited. We had even joked about being on Ellen one day…then it happened! Performing on GMA and seeing our faces on the big screen in Times Square was a moment we’ll never forget.
Do you three get recognized all over the place now?
Sometimes – usually when we are all together or out filming something… or driving around in Shae’s car!
How did you come up with your group name? What other names were you considering?
The name SketchShe was born over a few glasses (ahem, bottles) of wine one night. It was early on and we were playing around with names that highlighted our sketch comedy roots and all female members. It was either ‘SketchShe’ or ‘Mashaelana’…thoughts?
Your video “Mime Through Time” is incredibly fun and unique. Can you break down how you go about putting a video like that together? Ultimately, how do you decide what video to create?
We knew we had to raise the bar after “Bohemian CARsody” which is why we decided on the mashup to keep it interesting from start to finish. We narrowed down the songs based on the iconic costumes and moves. When we’re dancing or laughing along we know a video is ready to go!
Are you already working on future videos? Can you share what videos you are currently working on?
We’re constantly coming up with new ideas and crazy video concepts. We are working on a few more lip-syncing pieces….but expect some new twists!
With your fame and popularity increase, have you upgraded your filming techniques?
Yes and no – we always want to up the anty everytime we make a new video but that doesn’t necessarily mean upgrading our film equipment! The main focus is always to keep it looking fresh, entertaining, fun and never being predictable!
What’s ahead for you ladies? Where do you see SketchShe in the next few years?
WORLD DOMINATION haha. The best thing about SketchShe is it allows us to explore a lot of different formats and platforms – sketch, musical comedy, short films, online, apps, a TV show. The possibilities are endless! At present we’re growing our Youtube channel and also developing a TV show. There are a few cheeky travel plans in the works as well!
