On Thursday, October 9th, the front-man of the indie-alternative band, Wakey! Wakey!, Michael Grubbs performed a very intimate show at the West Hollywood venue, the Roxy Theatre.
People may remember Grubbs from his reoccurring role of the hit teen drama, One Tree Hill, where he played “Grubbs”, the local club bartender.
In the beginning of the night, Grubbs announced the engagement to his fiancée which seems to be the inspiration for the happiness throughout his sophomore album. For this stripped down show, he alternated between songs from his latest album, Salvation and his album Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said the Last Time I Saw You… which debuted in 2010.
Salvation Stripped allows listeners a better way to connect to Grubb’s sentimental lyrics. Songs like “Nothing’s Cool,” Salvation,” and “Stop the World” are catchy but the stripped versions are perfect for shows like this.
The stories Michael shared between songs were almost as captivating as the lyrics. The lyrics from “Through the Night,” the second track from Salvation, were inspired by a recorded message after a drunken night in California. He also showed how charming and funny he is too.
From the moment Michael opened his mouth, he instantly grabbed the listeners with his anthemic stylings and soundtrack-friendly vibe. His vocals are strong and his writing is incredibly solid and mature.
Over the summer, I interviewed Michael and that can be viewed here: https://music.allaccess.com/an-interview-with-wakeywakey-front-man-michael-grubbs-about-his-past-present-and-future-with-the-band/
