The Friday Five: New Music Roundup 8/13/21
Friday’s mean new music. Here are some of the highlights of the day’s releases:
“You Can Have It” by Chelsea Cutler
Republic Records singer, songwriter and producer Chelsea Cutler follows up last month’s emotional single, “Walking Away” with “You Can Have It.” Carefree and light-hearted finds Cutler exploring the happy side of love – which marks a contrast to her usual tone, but one she nails.
“OUT OUT (f. Charli XCX & Saweetie)” by Joel Corry & Jax Jones
U.K. DJs and producers Joel Corry & Jax Jones take on Belgian musician Stromae’s 2010 hit “Alors on danse” with the help of pop singer Charli XCX and rapper Saweetie. Undeniably danceable, the massive collaboration arrives just in time to get the weekend started.
“papercuts” by Machine Gun Kelly
After taking on the pop-punk sound in his 2020 album Tickets To My Downfall, the Interscope artist continues his domination of the sound in the angsty new single “papercuts.” In addition to being produced by Nick Long, Kelly continues his work with blink-182’s drummer Travis Barker who also produced the track. “papercuts” serves as the lead single to MGK’s sixth studio album Born With Horns.
“a million pretty pieces” by Nightly & Fleurie
Nashville based band Nightly follows up their energetic synth-pop April single “lover/loner” with the sentimental “a million pretty pieces” which features fellow Nashville artist Fleurie. Amid a melancholy guitar and piano, Nightly sweetly open themselves up to love and pain as they offer their heart the opportunity to be broken into “a million pretty pieces.”
“Over You Is You (f. Matt Stell)” by Tenille Arts
Combining elements of pop, country and rock, Canadian country singer Tenille Arts taps fellow country artist Matt Stell for a break-up they can’t seem to get over in “Over You Is You.” Arts also announced that her third studio album, Girl to Girl will arrive on October 22nd and that the songs featured “were written as letters to [herself].” She adds, “now they’ll be for you.”
