Thanks for your time! How’s 2016 treating you so far? How’s your summer been going? What were some of the highlights of 2015 for you?
Summer’s been going great. Excited for all the new music coming out! 2015 was a great year with a lot of lessons but 2016 has been insane (both good and bad) highlight of 2015 was my record hitting the top 20 (#11) on the billboard dance charts! My first official billboard hit! The highlight of this year was touring around the country! My first national tour, can’t wait to get back on the road! Lots of firsts so it’s exciting!
Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
Yes! My first official performance was in the first grade, I was Cher & sang “I Got You Babe” I knew I always wanted to be on stage, act, sing, be in front of the camera, be creative. I just never thought it was possible until I became of age. I realized that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and have been going non stop since.
How did you come up with your name? What does the X stand for?
The X in my name stands for being undefined. I created my stage name as my official mark of independence. I stand for empowerment, acceptance and standing for what’s right. Malcolm X and other global influencers who have made major impacts in our history have made me the person I am today so he also has something to do with the name choice. If you are a follower of mine, you are X’d out! You are undefined and limitless and beautiful!
What was the inspiration behind your newest single, “Gets Me High”? How creatively involved were you with the music video for it? What was it like shooting it?
I wrote “Gets Me High” when I was going through a lot in my life. It’s about overcoming life’s trials and tribulations. Im a very hands on artist and I worked hand and hand with the director, Walu, to really make this vision come to life. I wanted it to tell a story of someone who is Unbreakable no matter how much comes at them at one time. Shooting it was amazing! I love acting so much so it was so fun to be able to fully act and make this vision come true!
When do you hope to release more music? A full-length album?
I’m hoping to release an EP by the end of the year!! I have an album ready to go but we all know it’s a singles game now so I’ll be releasing singles until I get my hit! I have the music ready and I just want the world to hear it but in due time!
Who are some of your favorite artists? Who would you still love to work with in the future?
So many people id love to work with. My favorite artist of all time is Michael Jackson. Major influencers of mine are Madonna, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, 2pac, Biggie, John Mayer. The list goes on and on! I’d love to work with them all but I’m dying to work with Kehlani and Drake. We will make magic together. No doubt.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
My purpose is to spread love and light through my art. I want to make people feel something, I want to move people, I want to make people think differently. I want to help people get through their hardest struggles. I think there’s a lot going on in the world and I just want to make people feel good. I want to inspire people even if it’s one person, I’m happy.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?
I’m a real person, I’ve been through real things in my life and I want people to connect with that and resonate with that. Oh yea and I do it for Love. Always.
