On Thursday (May 17), the New York-based electro-dance duo Sofi Tukker took over LA’s Fonda Theatre for a two-hour long dance party. This was the second night at the venue because the first concert, the night before, sold out so quickly. Entitled the Treehouse World Tour, Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern are out celebrating the release of their debut album “Treehouse,” out now via Ultra Records.
They have been playing shows all over the U.S for about a month now and will wrap up on May 27th in San Diego. Then they will head to Europe before coming back stateside for the Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas. (TOUR)
Formed in 2013, Sofi Tukker truly became a household name with their hit song, “Best Friend” that was featured in a commercial during Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone X last fall.
Before Sofi Tukker took the stage, opener LP Giobbi kicked off the night with a robust DJ set that wrapped up by being joined by Grammy-nominated singer Kah-Lo, and then by Hermixalot and Computo to perform their single “Amber Rose.”
By the time they all left, the crowd’s feet were good and ready for a night of non-stop dancing. To everyone’s surprise, instead of continuing to play dance music while they set the stage for Sofi Tukker, jungle and treehouse noises were blared through the speakers. Crickets, water trickling and wild birds were heard squawking and chirping away. But about 10 minutes was all it took to get the stage prepared and suddenly Sofi Tukker was front and center. Yelling and thunderous applause immediately welcomed them.
Right away Sofi Tukker began talking to the crowd and yelling “Are you ready to dance Los Angeles?!” (YES, THEY WERE!)
Sofi Tukker performed the majority of their “Treehouse” album including “Awoo,” “Matadora,” “Johny,” “Greed,” “Fuck They,” “Batshit,” “Energia” and others. It’s clear from the very first number just how energetic and happy the two of them are to be performing these songs. They are true active participants in their dance pop music. They were either playing guitars and beating on a drum in the center of the stage or they were dancing and singing. They did it all! Along with how exciting it was to watch the two of them do their thing, it’s hard not to be taken over by their fun music as well. Sofi Tukker create unique sounds that explore a variety of genres like Brazilian poetry, Japanese rap and of course dance-electro beats.
During “Awoo,” Sofi Tukker invited singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers to the stage to dance and sing with them. Apparently the night before, they had asked several audience members to come dance on stage and they weren’t very enthusiastic about it so they decided to ask a friend to dance with them for this second show.
The crowd really livened up during their performance of their newest radio single, “Batshit.”
From start to finish, the duo were incredibly engaging with the packed audience. If they weren’t asking the crowd to sing verses, they were asking them to mimic their dance moves.
At point during the show, Tukker announced to the crowd that it happened to be Sofi’s birthday and suddenly a large cake full of lit candles and 10 or so of her best friends appeared on stage. The audience sang
“Happy Birthday” and Sofi blew the candles out. At the end, she exclaimed, “If someone asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, this is exactly what I want!”
Sofi Tukker are a bold and adventurous duo that aren’t to be missed. Check out this tour for a guaranteed night of dancing and definite positive energy!
