Singer & Songwriter NYA Looks Back On Childhood & Mental Illness In New Single, “Mother’s Daughter”
Following up her Top 40 single, “Closer Than Close,” the genre-bending artist releases the personal and vulnerable, “Mother’s Daughter.”

The new song continues to give fans a taste of her upcoming debut album that she feels will “showcase different sides of [her] as an artist.” While “Closer Than Close” was a feel good track that was inspired by NYA‘s real life relationship with her now-recent husband, “Mother’s Daughter” takes a different tone that continues to focus on a real-life relationship that is close to the multifaceted singer.
NYA tells All Access, “‘Mother’s Daughter’ is a really personal song for me. It’s about growing up with a mentally ill parent and how that experience affected me. My mom often suffered from a roll-a-coaster of emotions. The highs were high, but the lows were low. When you grow up in that scenario, you can find that your emotional regulation is a bit out of whack. And in that moment of discovery, you wonder if you’re predetermined to be like your parent. It was important to me that this song was not an angry or judgmental because feelings (especially when they’re about family) are often much more complex than that. You can love someone but not want to be them.“

Despite growing up in such an unstable environment, NYA recognizes the parts of her mother that she values as she describes her mom as “really passionate” and “loyal to a fault.” She also says her mom “has a generous and protective spirit” and that she has “always looked up to and [has] tried to emulate those characteristics.”
The ability to be so open with her experience and music has garnered the artist plenty of accomplishments since she began releasing music in 2017 including charting singles across Hot AC radio, millions of YouTube views, working alongside multi-Grammy award winning talent and having her single, “Closer Than Close” play across Top 40 radio.
She recalls that experience with All Access saying, “hearing ‘Closer than Close’ on the radio was super exciting! You often live with songs for a while before they are released, and that was definitely the case with ‘Closer Than Close.’ So you have a lot of time to wonder how people will respond to your song before you finally release it into the wild, so to speak. ‘Closer than Close’ playing on the radio was a great indicator that people were enjoying the song, which makes me very happy!“
