Shanghai Born/Canadian Raised Artist PIAO Shares Debut Single, “SFL” & How T-Pain Discovered Her. + LIVE Show in LA TONIGHT.
Combining influence and experience from both Asian and Western cultures the recent Berklee graduate has been able to find her unique voice and release her first single, “SFL.” The singer and multi-instrumentalist, PIAO has been working towards this debut since the age of 3 when her mom realized her interest in the living room piano.
The lead single – which stands for “Searching For Life” – was an obvious choice for her introduction to the world as she tells All Access that “it encapsulates the answer to a lot of her other songs, which a lot of them were questions.” She adds that “‘SFL’ is kind of the thesis that I keep referring back to to support this life essay.“
Bridging the gap between Chinese pop and American R&B music “SFL” also highlights the new artists’ toughest chapters of life. “I graduated straight into the pandemic so I along with the rest of the world was kind of forced to really sit with ourselves, and hear the loud thoughts we would otherwise drown out with distractions and work,” she explains as the inspiration behind the song. “It should remind you that it’s okay to do things that don’t make sense – and to take life step by step.”
While in her senior year of Berklee, she got discovered by T-Pain when he came across one of her videos on Instagram and got approached by his management. Although she wasn’t writing her own songs at the time, she “faked it till [she] made it” and told his team “yes” when they asked her about her songwriting on a phone call.
That lie inspired PIAO to get serious about her musical career and “turn this life into the truth” with her writing her “very first song that night.” Post graduation found her staying in Atlanta for a year to work with him and his team and can’t “thank them enough.”
Check out the debut single from the talented PIAO and be sure to keep an eye (and ear) on this artist in the future.
