VAULTS are an electro pop trio from London, consisting of Barney, Ben and frontwoman Blythe. They are best known for “One More Night” that was featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. Their debut single PREMONITIONS was released via National Anthem last summer, and soon followed by LIFESPAN and the VULTURES EP, led by VULTURES and POISON later in the year.
Following a sell out UK tour and supports with Everything Everything and Paolo Nutini, the band have also performed at a number of select summer festivals, including Lovebox, T in the Park and Reading & Leeds.
All Access Music writer, Nicole DeRosa had a chance to catch up with front woman, Blythe of VAULTS between gigs. Enjoy their chat below!
Hey Vaults! How are you guys today? What’s on the agenda today besides our interview?
Hello Nicole! This is Blythe on behalf of us all. The boys are in the back on the van as I shout these questions at them. We have just touched down at JFK and we are soon headed to our gig at Roughtrade New York. Not too jet lagged (we hope) and I’m looking forward to exercising the lungs.
For those that are not familiar with VAULTS and your music, how did you get your start? Who or what was the catalyst for you to want to live the life of a musical gypsy?
Ha! Musical gypsy we like that term…. Hmmm, so a dislike of 9-5 working hours and office environments propelled us to being musical reprobates. Plus a desire to explore lands far and near and the opportunity to meet new people every day.
Following a SELL OUT debut UK tour and supports with Everything Everything and Paolo Nutini, you guys have also performed at a number of summer festivals including Lovebox, T in the Park and Reading & Leeds. What was the highlight / most memorable moment from the tour so far?
Our favourite bits over the summer have been the European festivals for sure. Such warm and civilised crowds full of people from different cultures; it makes for a good deal of laughs and excitement as well as better weather conditions than in England!
One moment you asked for though…I’d say hanging at the top of a huge wooden climbing frame style sculpture watching the sun go down at Dockville in Germany and getting down to philosophical chats with Barney.
NEW SINGLE: PREMONITIONS
What did you learn between your previous work with the VULTURES Ep, collaborations and playing live, that you felt you wanted to infuse into your upcoming release, POISON which will be out later this year?
Every release is a learning process so you adapt after each time you go through making and releasing something. More specific to this year we’ve learned the importance of keeping the creative process fun. This probably seems an obvious thing to say but sometimes it’s all too easy you get heavy browed and stuck in the brain mud.
Who have been your inspirations growing up that also inspire you today?
We’ll say one major influence each that are still relevant to us today: mine would be Bjork, Ben’s is Jeff Beck and Barney’s is Steve Reich.
Who would you love to collaborate with next…I’m talking wish / bucket list!?
We would love to collaborate with a big gospel choir or a Bulgarian choir or the London Symphony Orchestra.
Nowadays, everything is so instant…you press a button and it’s yours ala Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes etc. What was the first album you saved up for and purchased for yourself?
Ben: Guns and Roses “Appetite For Destruction”
Barney: Michael Jackson “Dangerous”
Blythe: The Beach Boys! “Best of!”
What was the first song you remember falling in love with and why?
Blythe: “Help Me Ronda” by The Beach Boys.
Ben : “In My Life” by The Beatles
Barney: Ella Fitzgerald’s cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” 🙂
Who is in your current playlist? What artists or bands are in current rotation for you?
Blythe: I’m loving Arthur Russell as a new find, and Lana Del Rey is fascinating
Barney: Mura Masa
Ben: Lower Dens
What’s on tap next for VAULTS? What are you most excited about for this year?
We are most excited about playing on this short tour of the states. Especially playing and partying in San Francisco as we have never been there before (and it’s the home of kinky fun times!) 😉
