Thanks for your time today! How has 2016 been treating you? What were some of the highlights of 2015 for you and your music?
2016 has been absolutely amazing so far! 2015 was also a great year for me but I think the highlight was writing and recording my single “Machines”. I really found my sound and that’s not only a highlight for me in 2015 but also one in my career.
Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Has your family always been supportive of you? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
I used to sing around the house ever since I could talk but it wasn’t until I entered my school talent show in kindergarten that I realized I wanted to become a singer professionally. My entire family have been so supportive of me throughout my career thus far and I couldn’t be more grateful for that! My earliest musical memory was when I was about 3 or 4 and I was at a hotel singing on the balcony and the people below us actually complained because a little girl was singing too loudly! Oops!
I understand that you’ve been writing music forever. Can you remember what the first song you wrote was about?
My first music writing memory has to be when I was about 4. I was walking around my house singing and writing a song about the things I saw as I was wandering around. The song had zero plot line but full of character!
At just 13 years-old, you opened for One Direction. How did that happen? What was that experience like for you?
It was absolutely incredible but horrifying. There’s nothing really to prepare you for something as big as an arena but in the end it was the best experience of my life.
Let’s talk about your newest single, “Machines”. Where did the inspiration for it come from? When do you hope to release an entire of collection of new music?
“Machines” was a song that I immediately fell in love with. I spent months working on the lyrics and perfecting every detail of the song with my producers and I’m so proud of it! The song to me is about how hard I’ve worked and continue to work throughout my career. The idea of doing something ‘like a machine’ means that I’m going to continue on this journey and nothing is going to get in my way, like a strong and meticulous machine. I want to express to my fans that if I can do it so can they and we can’t let anything get in our way! I hope to be releasing new material in the near future so stay tuned!
How do you think you have grown as an artist since you first started performing and writing music?
Well for one my sound has completely changed. I went from a very bubblegum pop style to an edgy and more defined sound. It took a very long time to truly discover where I wanted to go with my music and I think I really nailed it with “Machines”. It’s the perfect balance of the old and new Camryn!
What’s it been like working with Grammy winner, Linney and Q on your music? What it intimidating at all going into the studio with them?
Linney and Q are absolutely amazing! They are both talented and total goofballs! At first I was a little nervous but once we got to know each other we became so close. I can really call them family and I’m so happy we were able to create amazing music together!
You and I have something in common- we both LOVE Beyonce! So, what do you love the most about Mrs. Carter? What’s your favorite song by her?
Queen B is so hands on in every aspect of her career and I really admire that. She is really involved in all details right down to a certain pose in her performances and not many artists are as in control as she is and that’s how I want to be as I continue in my own career. I’m obsessed with “Pretty Hurts” from her Beyoncé album but honestly that entire album is amazing!
Who are some of your other favorite artists? Who would you absolutely love to collaborate with in the future?
Besides the obvious (Beyoncé), I would love to collaborate with Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, and The Weeknd. I want to collaborate with them not only because they are some of my favorite artists but because they inspired a lot of my music including “Machines”!
How important do you think social media has been for your career? How active do you try to stay on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc..?
Social media isn’t just a big part of my career but it’s a big part of how we communicate in our everyday lives. That being said I try to constantly stay active on everything for friends and fans. It’s such a great way for me to really make connections with my fans and people around the world and I like to take advantage of that as much as possible.
Do you plan to tour much this year? Where can fans catch you performing next?
I hope to be getting out on the road very soon! Right now I’m really focusing on sharing “Machines” with my fans. Tours can pop up overnight so you really never know! I’ll be sure to let everyone know the second I have tour dates ready!
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
For me music is a way of escaping. I hope people get excited and feel empowered when they hear “Machines” and truly believe that they can do anything, because they can!
