Marshall was recently invited to go on the road with Justin Timberlake / Wright Entertainment Group to learn more about the industry.
Learn even more about Alex in the following All Access interview:
Thanks for your time! Now that we are more than half-way through 2016, what are some words you would use to describe it?
Fast-paced, Exciting, Traveling, Lessons Learned, New Music
What were some of the highlights of 2016 for you and your music?
Releasing new music and preparing for the release of my album!
Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
I actually started playing piano when I was five. I always loved playing/writing music, but It didn’t turn into anything serious until half way through my senior year of high school — when the group I was playing in got a record contact. I ended up signing the deal and left on tour the day after high school graduation.
How have things been different for you and your career since you went solo How different has it been putting together music?
It was a change going from the group to being solo… Leaving a full team and going on your own is a big change/step. There are a lot of components that go into making an album and being an artist — It comes with a lot of challenges and you must be able to wear multiple hats!
Where did the inspiration for your debut single, “Hurricane,” come from?
I wrote ‘Hurricane’ about an ex-girlfriend of mine. The relationship had a lot of highs and lows. It was actually the last song I recorded for the album, but it ended up being the first single of the record.
Can you talk about writing and producing all the songs on your upcoming EP?
The writing/recording process was a bit tricky for me on this round of things. I ended up making around 50-60 songs before cutting down to 10-12 tracks.. There was a lot of experimenting before I heard that “sound” that I really connected with.
What was it like being asked to join Justin Timberlake/Wright Entertainment Group on the road to learn more about the industry? What did you learn from that experience?
I’m always a sponge with everything… just listening and soaking up everything, so the opportunity to be around a team of people that have been in the business and successful for many years was a big blessing.
I’m curious to know about your involvement with the philanthropy, Music Saves Lifes. How did you get involved with it?
With my previous group we connected with a lot of people. Helping where I can is important to me — I’d love to have the opportunity to create a space for creatives to come and create their art for free… Kind of like a recording studio type atmosphere, but not limited to just music — something for all creatives to come and create!
Who are some of your favorite artists and what bands continue to inspire you and your music? Who would you love to work with in the future?
MJ! J. Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Prince, Cameo
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
My goal when I write songs is to move people — Not necessarily by my personal stories from the lyrics, but in the way where they are able to listen to the lyrics and apply the situations to themselves.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?
Long walks on the beach….. Kidding. I’m more of a “in the mountains” kind of guy… I’m actually getting ready to shoot the music video for my next single, so stay tuned and be on the lookout! It’s going to be a fun one 🙂
