“Wasting Time,” “SOB,” “A Little Honey” and “I Need Never Get Old” are just a few of the songs heard by the bluesy and soulful band, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats this past Wednesday, August 15th at LA’s Greek Theatre.
Earlier this year, on March 9th, the Denver-based group released their latest album, “Tearing Out The Seams” via Stax Records. Throughout this spring and summer, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Nightsweats have been taking their celebrated live show on the road for an extensive run of dates in the U.S. For tickets and future dates check out their website.
The initial writing and recording sessions for Tearing at the Seams took place in Rodeo, New Mexico where Rateliff & The Night Sweats re-established their dynamic off the stage and in the studio.
“For the first record I demo’ed everything up and created most of the parts,” says Rateliff. “This time, I felt like we’ve all spent so much time on the road that we should all go off somewhere together. We should all have that experience together.”
The band finished recording with producer Richard Swift—who has helmed records for The Shins and Foxygen in addition to The Night Sweats’ debut—collectively creating a group of songs that capture the band’s emotion and intensity.
Their Greek Theatre show certainly proved what incredible stage dynamics these guys have together. When Rateliff wasn’t asking the packed crowd how they were doing, he was jamming and jiving on stage with his guitar or tambourine. The front-man’s energy was contagious and appeared like he would never slow down. Throughout the set, the lights behind the band changed colors and frequency, creating a bright and lively spectacle for everyone to watch.
The caliber of musicianship must also be mentioned when reviewing a Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats concert. Every single one of them is at the top of their career and
immensely skilled and talented. Rateliff was sure to introduce his band during the show and let them all have plenty of solo fun on stage. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats is made up of Rateliff (vocals, guitar), Joseph Pope III (bass), Patrick Meese (drums), Luke Mossman (guitar), Mark Shusterman (keys), Andy Wild (saxophone), Scott Frock (trumpet) and Jeff Dazey (saxophone).
This writer right away noticed that most concert-goers never sat down for the entire show. That’s the kind of performance it was- a dance your butt off, clap your hands and stomp your feet happy kind of show.
