All Access was fortunate enough to attend Ms. Lauryn Hill’s LA show at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday, September 18th. De La Soul opened the concert and featured an unannounced appearance by “Saturday Night Live” comedian, Michael Che, who had just hosted the previous night’s Emmy Awards.
Well-known comic Dave Chappelle followed with 45 minutes of his usual hilarious brand of stand-up. In typical Chappelle fashion, upon entry into the Hollywood Bowl, all concert-goers’ phones were placed in locked satchels so they couldn’t be used during his time on stage. It was quite something to see no phones lighting up to record or take selfies for about an hour. Flyers were scattered throughout the venue stating that “Violators will be ejected!” The
comic talked about many current issues including school shootings, the #MeToo movement and the opioid crisis. He talked about growing up poor and the hassle he would give his father about it. Once his set was over, the lights came up and people rushed to retrieve their phones. It was chaos but understandably people wanted to capture Ms. Hill’s performance.
Multi-platinum performer Ms. Lauryn Hill rose to prominence with The Fugees and took the world by storm two decades ago as a solo artist with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Singles including “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Ex-Factor” catapulted her to superstardom, ultimately earning her ten GRAMMY® nominations and five GRAMMY® Award wins.
The opening classroom sequence from the album began Ms. Lauryn Hill’s set. When it ended, the singer entered the stage wearing a big pale yellow skirt and a long-sleeved white shirt. She also wore a black beret and lots of gold long necklaces and large gold earrings. It also appeared that she had a jacket attached to her back like a backpack.
Right away, she exclaimed to the crowd, “Happy 20th Anniversary to this album! My daughter is turning 20 years old this year too. Milestones. All milestones.”
Then she went on to perform every song on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in some capacity. While it was clear which song from the collection was being performed, they sounded very different. Instead, backed by a 10-piece band, she played brand new re-imaginations of these beloved tunes. “Lost Ones,” “Everything is Everything,” “When It Hurts So Bad,” “Ex-Factor” and others were transformed into funky numbers almost unrecognizable. This didn’t stop the sold-out crowd from dancing and singing along.
The screen behind the band and Hill changed for each song to fit the song’s overall theme and mood. Toward the end of the show, Hill was full of advice and powerful statements.
During “Final Hour,” she urged the crowd to be on “the right side of history, the right side of your human moral character. This world right now needs character — people of integrity to stand up and present themselves and create an example and a standard for other people who perhaps weren’t taught that way.”
Throughout the concert, Ms. Lauryn Hill was in complete control of her band and everything on stage, using her hands to direct the band, as would an orchestra conductor. It’s clear that this artist had a particular vision for the show. She knew what she wanted and how to get there. She was in command.
Before ending the show with “That Thing You Do,” she thanked the audience for their 20 years of support. “I want you to know that I appreciate the fact that you appreciated this music. I wanted to make an album that resonated with my generation. I wanted us to talk about love and not hide from it.”
