On July 12th, the Malaysian songstress, Yuna released her fourth studio album via Verve Forecast Records. Entitled “Rouge,” the collection features collaborations with rapper G-Eazy, Tyler The Creator, Little Simz and others. In support of this brand new album, Yuna recently kicked off her Rouge Tour in Chicago, Illinois on July 14th and will wrap up on December 12th in London, England.
“When asked about making this particular album, Yuna explained, “I’m a Muslim singer-songwriter, but I never saw myself as that. That label became more obvious to me as I moved to LA…it was really cool that everyone I met supported the fact that I do my own thing and don’t sacrifice my identity for the music. The whole album is about how I am with myself: I’m comfortable with my relationship, with my focus on my career. It’s the color of becoming this woman I am.”
Yuna released her debut album in 2008, earning her five Malaysian Music Award nominations. Her U.S. debut EP, “Decorate,” featured production by Grammy-award winning producer Pharrell Williams and this was followed by her 2016 critically acclaimed full-length album, “Chapters,” which features tracks with Usher, Jhené Aiko and DJ Premier.
All Access had the pleasure of being at her home LA concert last week on Thursday, July 25th at the Hollywood venue, Fonda Theatre. After finishing the first song, Yuna told the crowd that despite being from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she has been living in Los Angeles for about 10 years now, so LA feels
more like home now. Repeatedly she thanked the audience for being there and supporting her throughout her career. It was her first performance at the Fonda, fulfilling a life-long dream.
For about an hour and a half, the singer performed many of the songs on “Rouge,” including “Castaway,” “(Not) The Love of My Life,” “Pink Youth,” “Forget About You” and others. For “Likes,” rapper Kyle joined her on stage and much to the sold-out crowd’s delight G-Eazy walked on stage to rap his verse on “Blank Marquee.”
Yuna also sang a couple older favorites, “Lullabies,” “Used To Love You” and her hit song with Usher, “Crush.”
For the entire night, she was accompanied by all-female band and four back-up dancers. All of them were dressed in bold red outfits to fit with her latest album, “Rouge.” Yuna and her incredible dancers did intricate choreography to many of the songs that wowed everyone and kept the crowd grooving right along.
Dressed effortlessly chic, Yuna looked stunning on stage wearing a bright red leather jacket and a black blouse under that and a pair of shiny black leather pants. From beginning to end, she was poised and seemed happy and at ease on stage.
