The R&B group, After 7 have been making music since they formed in 1987. Kevon Edmonds, Melvin Edmonds and Keith Mitchell were the original After 7 members. (Babyface’s 2 brothers)
The current band line-up includes Kevon Edmonds, Jason Edmonds (Melvin’s son and Babyface’s nephew) and Keith Mitchell.
The Edmonds brothers are the siblings of popular pop and R&B singer-songwriter–producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds“ who actually created the group along with L.A. Reid. Back then and still today, Babyface writes and produced the majority of After 7’s music. Many of those songs went on to become major hits.
Their debut self-titled album had the single “Ready or Not” which climbed the billboard charts to the #1 position on R&B while their smash single “Can’t Stop” topped out at #6 on billboards Hot 100 Pop Charts. The first release from their 1989 debut album, “Heat Of The Moment” was a Top Ten Single on the Urban Charts and too garnered a solid position on the Pop Charts which then opened the door to a host of awards and major tours. After 7’s success continued through the years with more hits with singles “Nights Like This”, from the movie soundtrack, “The Five Heartbeats”, “Baby I’m For Real”, “Kickin’ It”, “Can He Love You Like This” and others.
It is apparent throughout their songs just how influenced they are by such groups as The Whispers, Temptations, Four Tops and Originals. Indeed, in their own unique way, After 7 manages to create a contemporary presence while combining a smooth style of the sixty’s. They have shared the stage with many different artists ranging from BabyFace, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Gladys Knight, M. C. Hammer, Patti LaBelle, Peabo Bryson, R Kelly, Regina Belle, Smokey Robinson, The Whispers and Whitney Houston in addition to many others. Their music is timeless and their presentation has always been classy and elegant.
In the early 2000s Jason Edmonds (Melvin’s son) joined original members Kevon Edmonds and Keith Mitchell replacing his father, Melvin in the group to make up the trio. Despite the line-up changes, After 7 has maintained a constant presence with live performances, entertaining fans and audiences across the country and abroad.
Today “After7” is proud to announce they have returned to the studio for the first time since the mid-90’s. Kevon, Keith and Jason, joined by former original member, Melvin Edmonds have released their new single “I Want You”. This track was written and produced by Kenneth “Babyface ” Edmonds and Daryl Simmons. They are now both helping the group put together the band’s forthcoming album which is expected to be released later this year.
