Thanks for your time today, Jocelyn! So, how’s 2016 been treating you so far? What were some of the highlights of 2015 for you and your music?
Oh man!! 2016 is looking utterly different than 2015. Last year at this time I was moving across the country, releasing my first single and attempting to go on a Canadian radio tour with no label and no money. Fast forward to now and I am feeling like the luckiest girl alive. I have a team!! It’s so special.
Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
I think I was always lucky to know that I could open my mouth and sing and people would react. I always knew there was a special power in that that was beyond words. My music teacher in elementary school, Mrs Rhodes was the very first person to see something in me. I’m not sure I would have sang without her. But it wasn’t until I discovered songwriting that I really became passionate about this industry.
Let’s talk about your debut single, “Jackpot”. Where did the inspiration for it come from? I understand that you are currently working on the music video for it. How’s that going?
Jackpot was a really fun, easy song to write. I don’t typically write happy songs and it was nice to stretch my boundaries. I wrote it with Hello Moth, who also produced it, and anything he makes is pretty sick. The music video was a riot to make. It really ignited this new interest in acting and directing. I am so excited for you all to see it.
When do you hope to be releasing your debut EP this year? How will the music on it be different or similar to “Jackpot”?
The EP will be out this spring. I AM POOPY PANTS EXCITED!! If people are expecting the album to sound like Jackpot they will be shocked. It will span a lot of genres and be pretty dark and soulful. I live to write that kind of music. It’s cool to work with so many different producers that pull new things out of me and my songs.
What have been some artists that have consistently inspired you and your music? Who would you absolutely love to work with in the future?
I’ve been a bit obsessed with Alessia Cara. I recently got to work with a few writers on her song Here and I am so pumped about that song. They really understood me right away. That’s a really good feeling. I also recently worked with Ryan Guldemond from the band Mother Mother which was wild. We wrote some of my favorite songs and I feel very lucky to get to work with such an innovative, unique person. He brought me out in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
You’ve written music for many TV shows. What shows were the most fun and memorable to work on? Do you still get excited when you hear your music on TV?
Oh my goshhhhhh. Writing for film and TV is such a different experience than writing as a solo artist. It taught me a lot about putting yourself aside and serving what the scene needed. I really loved singing on that Target commercial I landed 2 years ago. It was very cool to see how people reacted to it. And how many people bought the song!! So cool.
How’s your national tour been going so far? Where are you excited to perform at next?
I love to travel. Like… How is this my job?! There are so many places. I’m really pumped for San Fran and Austin for SXSW. Touring can be a lot.. It’s tiring sometimes. But when you do what you love that never seems to matter. I mean.. I’m in NYC right now!! Who cares that I haven’t slept in 3 days. So happy.
What does it mean to you to be the 2016 Spotify Canadian Artist To Watch?
Duuuuude. Spotify has been so good to me. They really allow a place for new artists to be introduced to new listeners and that means more than anything to me. I couldn’t believe when I got the news that I was chosen.
What was it like having your song “So Groovy” featured in a Target commercial in 2013?
I remember I got a call from my little brothers being like, “Joce. You’re on the TV”. I was like, no.. It’s too early!!! And then they started singing the song! I sang that song in the studio and it was in a commercial 2 weeks later. That was wild. It was hard to wrap my head around. It still is.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
I just want people to feel. I want them to feel like they have a space with me to be what they are and get to celebrate that. Sometimes life is shitty.. And I am a realist. I believe that there’s so much power in owning where you are. I hope my music connects to the heart and feels honest, (and maybe super bad ass). That is enough for me.
Would you like to share anything else with our readers about yourself or your music?
I am just so grateful. To anyone that comes to shows, buys the songs, talks to their friends, watches the videos… It has been a very, very long journey and I am blessed to still have fans that have been around from the beginning. I feel like I get to share myself with family, and to me that is everything.
Thanks so much for this opportunity. This was fun!!
