Since her days as a Fly Girl dancer on the hit show, In Living Color in 1991, Jennifer Lopez has been dazzling fans with her incredible moves and total star power. So it’s no wonder that a month from her big 50th Birthday, the singer, dancer and actress wowed the sold-out crowd at the 18,000 person Forum Theatre in Los Angeles this past Friday night (6/7). It was the first night of her fourth headlining tour called It’s My Party Tour. It will wrap up on July 27th in Miami after performing 31 shows in Canada and the U.S. Then she will head overseas for a few shows in August.
Jennifer Lopez has had a career spanning across music, film, television, fashion and more. She has sold over 75 million records worldwide, including 40 million albums. There have been 16 top 10 hit songs and three #1 albums. Her music achievements include winning three AMAs, three ASCAP Pop Music Awards, eight Billboard Latin Music Awards, two VMAs. She also became the first woman to receive the lifetime achievement Icon Award at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards for outstanding contribution to pop music. Her previous Dance Again World Tour sold over 1 million tickets, her films have brought in over $3.3 billion in worldwide box office receipts and last year she concluded her highly successful All I Have Las Vegas residency. As for now, Lopez is currently shooting the STX feature film, Hustlers and is a judge on The World of Dance.
Appropriately titled “It’s My Party Tour,” this show was indeed a non-stop celebration of the birthday girl and her biggest hits over the years. Many of her latest chart-toppers were heard too, like “Medicine,” which she opened the show with, “Ain’t Your Mama” and “Limitless.” For the latter, she was joined on stage by her 11-year-old daughter, Emme. The two wore matching read large gowns and belted out Ms. Lopez’s latest radio hit “Limitless” and mashed it with Sia’s “Titanium.” Other songs heard throughout the night were “Love Don’t Cost A Thing,” “I’m Real,” “Ain’t It Funny,” “Jenny From The Block,” and “If You Had My Love.” Unexpectedly, the Bronx singer even sang a lovely cover of Sara Bareilles’ song, “Gravity.” She closed the show with her hit “Let’s Get Loud” off her 1999 debut album, “On The 6.” For this final number, Lopez appeared on stage in a cake made up of her dancers. As the final notes were being played, hundreds of white balloons fell from the ceiling and confetti shot out into the seats.
Every few songs, the singer would quickly disappear to change clothes. She would return each time wearing something more dazzling and colorful then the previous ensemble. Some of the highlights included a Versace crystal-covered jumpsuit, gold knee-
high boots, white chaps and many sultry glittery bodysuits. The only thing that was the same for each look was that she continued to look absolutely stunning from head to toe. Her body looked amazing and she never looked tired or out of breath. In fact, she seemed to enjoy the faster and higher energy moments during the tight 2-hour set. The audience got louder with each performance and the singer reveled in it.
When it came to the stage, there was always something to feast your eyes on. Whether it was Lopez and her hypnotic moves even at one point hovering above the stage, her many talented dancers and their completely in-sync choreography or the digital and laser effects, the show was a splendid non-stop visual smorgasbord.
A fun highlight of the evening was when the singer picked an audience member who’s birthday it was to come up on stage. Then Jennifer and her dancers danced all around this gentleman as he sat center-stage like they were all in a strip club.
Surprisingly, with everything else going on throughout the show, Jennifer Lopez even made time to get sentimental and thanked the packed venue for being there and supporting her all these years. She was genuine and it was one of the more heartfelt moments of the night.
This adrenaline filled concert definitely proved just what an incredible entertainer J. Lo is. She clearly isn’t letting this milestone birthday slow her down one bit and her fans couldn’t be happier about it.
