In today’s digital music industry, we often believe the misconception that the Internet creates over night successes, just because a music file has the potential to reach the world with one click. However once again the success story of the song “Say Something” by New York duo, A Great Big World proves exactly the opposite. The song has recently reached platinum status in the US with the guys making many huge TV appearances, but many of A Great Big World newer fans may not know that the story of the song “Say Something” actually began in 2011.
The song was first released in February of that year on A Great Big World member Ian Axel’s independently released solo album, This Is The New Year. Sadly, the song went unnoticed, but by now we all know this story has a happy ending. It was repackaged and re-released in September of 2013 as the second single from A Great Big World’s major label debut, Is There Anybody Out There. The original version by the duo was first given the spotlight when they performed the song on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance. However,it was given yet another boost when the guys reworked the song into a duet for their performance with Christina Aguilera on NBC’s, The Voice.
That version caught fire with US TV viewers. The performance inspired A Great Big World to re-record the song yet again, with Aguilera featured on a new hit studio version. Epic Records released that third version on November 4th of last year, and a video for that version was released only 15 days later. Since then the new version with it’s video was finally enough for it to become a ‘Great Big’ hit in the ‘Great Big’ world. It has reached the top 5 of the US Billboard charts and the top 3 in Canada.
