Earlier this week on Tuesday (July 23rd), the artist, actor, activist and most recently, a New York Times best-selling author, Common graced the downtown Los Angeles venue, Grammy Museum.
For the first part of the evening, he sat down for an hour-long interview with the museum’s host, Scott Goldman. This Q & A was centered around the inspiration for the rapper’s new memoir, “Let Love Have The Last Word” which was published in May. He discussed at length how it was the motivator for his forthcoming album, “Let Love” set for release on August 30th via Loma Vista Recordings. (Pre-order it HERE.)
Common was incredibly heartfelt and honest throughout this
conversation and truly let his guard down. He really took the time to fully explain the evolution of this book. He spoke at length about the lessons he has learned over the years about love through his daughter and father especially. The rapper also went into detail about his experiences going into prisons in California over the past few years and what it was like meeting men on death row. He opened up about the importance of religion in his life and how going to church and getting therapy has truly helped him be a better man.
Then he entertained the intimate venue for 30+ minutes with many songs found on the new collection. Filling the stage with his talented six-piece band, together they delighted the crowd with the tracks, “My Fancy Free Future Love,” “Hercules,” “Good Morning Love,” “Show My That You Love,” “Memories of Home” featuring surprise guest BJ The Chicago Kid and “God Is Love” which Common welcomed Jonathan McReynolds on stage for.
Just as the music was starting for his first song, Common exclaimed, “This is the Let Love show and this is the Let Love Orchestra. My name is Common. Or some people call me the Dr. of Love. If you ask my ex-girlfriend, she’ll call me some other names, you know what I’m saying? But we’re here to celebrate love and the Let Love movement.”
In between songs, he answered a few thought-provoking questions from the crowd and then effortlessly segued into another song.
Common wrapped up the event with the fan-favorite, “The Light,” from his 2000 album Like Water for Chocolate.
The crowd was dancing in their chairs and truly feeling the magic and certainly love that the artist had shared with them all.
With an impressive career that has spanned three decades, Common’s work has been recognized with numerous GRAMMY® Awards, an Emmy® Award, a Golden Globe®, and an Academy® Award for the song “Glory,” which he co-wrote and performed with John Legend.
Common is currently on his Let Love Tour, which started in Denver, Colorado at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom and continues through marquee venues in the US and Canada before touring Europe for the first time since 2014.
