Last night (Wednesday, February 21), the internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Carla Bruni performed at the Downtown Los Angeles venue, The Orpheum Theatre in support of her latest fifth studio album, “French Touch.”
This collection was released on October 6th via Teorema and Barclay Records. It is full of delightful pop favorites, chosen for their personal significance. They are all re-imagined in Carla’s intimate and moving acoustic style. Produced by the legendary musician, producer and composer, David Foster, “French Touch” is a richly melodic and warm album.
Dressed in all black, the songstress looked chic and sophisticated on the candle-lit stage. She dazzled the crowd with a sampling of covers found on “French Touch” and her most beloved songs throughout her career.
Her renditions were unique and truly brought a new light to these classics. The crowd particularly enjoyed hearing Carla sing Willie Nelson’s “Crazy,” Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence,” Lou Reed ‘s “A Perfect Day,” The Clash’s “Jimmy Jazz,” Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” ABBA’s “The Winner Takes it All,” Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man,” AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” and many others.
It was equally impressive to see the Italian-French artist switch effortlessly to her songs from her 3 critically acclaimed French albums, “Quelqu’un m’a dit” (2003), “Comme si de rien n’était” (2008) and “Little French Songs” (2013). She performed “Quelqu’un m’a dit (Someone Told Me),” “Tout le monde (Everyone),” “Le toi du moi (You of Me),” “L’amoureuse (In Love),” “Ta tienne (Your yours)” and more.
It’s clear that Bruni has been writing and performing music since 1997 as her interaction with the audience was so natural and casual. At one point she commented that she wished that she were drinking a beer and then a couple songs later, an audience member gave her one! She often joked that her cover choices on “French Touch” were a bit unusual but they made sense to her.
After receiving loud applause after each number, the singer exclaimed, “You are so warm LA! Thank you! Maybe we will just cancel the rest of the tour and stay here!”
