Meet the Baltimore-based pop rock trio, Skyward Story!
The young group is ready to jump into the music scene full force with their catchy, high energy songs.
“A combination of a great riff and a melody practically designed to be shouted by a crowd goes a long way here. “Trading Secrets” is going to wiggle its way into your brain and bring you joy as that chorus reverberates in your head,” says Substream Magazine.
“Trading Secrets” is the lead single off their debut album via Outerloop Records, released last month on January 18th. It was recorded with multi-platinum producer, Matt Squire (One Direction, Panic! At The Disco, Ariana Grande).
“’Trading Secrets’ illustrates the blooming of a romantic relationship and that high between two people,” the group tells Substream.
The band is currently out on tour with Rookie of the Year.

Thanks for your time! What is on tap for the rest of your day?
Probably just gonna do some writing! -Aaron
Now that a new year has started, what musical goals does this band have for 2019? What are you most proud of about 2018? Do any of you make any New Years Resolutions?
Our New Years resolution is to be able to tour the entire US in one single tour by the end of 2019! 2018 was a big year for us and we can’t wait to see what we’ll do this year. -Scott
Can you recall the moment when you thought you could be in this group together? Was it hard to think of a name that you could agree on?
We clicked pretty much instantly actually. We gave ourselves a couple weeks to think of a new band name when Aaron joined and ended up coming up with Skyward Story in just a few days! -Brandon
How do you think your hometowns have influenced the sound and how you all carry yourselves in this group?
We used to have a more pop-punk sound that was inspired by the Baltimore music scene. Our recent influences have changed that. -Aaron
How has your various musical backgrounds helped shape the sound of this band?
It came together real well! Every time we write we get better at playing off of each other’s ideas. -Scott
How do you think that you have grown as a band since forming? What has remained the same?
Our writing has come a long way since we started. We’re also just becoming better musicians by how frequently we’ve been practicing and coming up with new ideas. We’re still the same people though, our personalities haven’t really changed. -Brandon
Let’s talk about your single, ‘Trading Secrets.” What was the inspiration for this song? How do you think it prepared your listeners for your debut album via Outerloop Records? (which is out now) Did anything surprise you about the making of it?
The song came from the line “any night without you is like a year without the summer” which is also the hook of the song. It’s really just about the feeling you get when you’re away from your partner and how you just have to be with them. With the release of our singles beforehand, Trading represents the vibe of the album. -Aaron
What was it like having the multi-platinum producer Matt Squire working with you on it?
It was very exciting to be working with someone who has jump started the careers of some of our favorite artists. He had a very systematic approach at all the songs we came to him with and made them all sound amazing. It was a very stress-free work environment. -Scott
Generally, how do you all go about writing your music? Do you write together or separately?
Both. Sometimes we’ll start from scratch together but most of the time we will bring something to the group and work with that one person’s idea. -Brandon
Where do you think you are all happiest- in the studio recording new music, on stage performing or elsewhere?
Recording new songs is amazing but there’s nothing like performing the songs live. -Aaron
Where can people see you perform next? How has your recent tour been going? What has been a favorite show of yours so far? What do you think makes an ideal show for this group?
Our last tour with The Ones You Forgot was so much fun. We’re doing a month long west coast tour in March that we’re very excited for! We played a show in Connecticut where we had never played before and brought 50 people ourselves, it was very unexpected. Our favorite shows are always the hometown ones though. -Scott
Do you find that all of social media and keeping up with your fans has gotten so overwhelming? Or do you rely heavily on others to take care of that for the band? Which platform would you say that you enjoy engaging with the most?
We love to use twitter just because it’s so quick and easy to post something. We still respond and post everything ourselves and it hasn’t gotten overwhelming! -Brandon
We are currently living through a very trying and politically charged time right now so I am curious
to know how you all think being musicians and in this band still gives you the most joy in life today? Do you find that your music is an escape to all the current events?
We just want people to have a good time when they hear our music. We hope that it’s an escape for the ones who listen. -Aaron
What musicians would you love to work with in the future? What artists have really been inspiring this group and your music since day 1?
Panic! and The 1975 have had some influence as of late, along with 5SOS. It would be a dream to work with either of them. -Scott

What do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope people continue to take away from your songs?
Take your time in life. Don’t rush things. Be nice to each other. -Brandon
I heard your new album Reborn charted with Billboard. Congratulations! Which charts and how does that feel?
Thank you! We got #18 Alternative Album, #22 Top Rock Album, #20 Independent Album, #75 Top Current Album, and #8 National Heatseeker. It’s a very exciting feeling to be recognized by Billboard. -Scott
