Learn more about this group in the following All Access interview:
Now that we are into the fall of 2016, what are some words you would use to describe this year? What have been some of the highlights for the band?
Fantastic, Adventuresome, Challenging, and just plain Busy! A major highlight for us was collaborating with REBL HQ on production of a music video for our cover of Hamilton’s “My Shot”. They are a class act and gave us an opportunity to work in state of the art facilities with a team using the best possible equipment. It was an incredible learning experience for us and one that has subtly adjusted our own video production workflow.
Growing up, did you all always want to be musicians? Can you recall your earliest musical memories?
We pretty much always knew. Sometimes Earl talks about how he could sing before he could talk. We’ve all had other professional experiences and educations along the way but never gave up on our dream.
Can you talk about the history of VoicePlay? How many years has this quintet been in existence?
Earl, Layne, and Geoff went to middle school together and formed, what would eventually become, this group in High School. But that was like 100 years ago. This exact cast of singers has been together for about 5 years.
What was it like competing on Season 4 of NBC’s “The Sing Off”? What did you all learn from that experience?
Being on “The Sing Off” is like running a marathon. It was totally rewarding, challenging, difficult, and unique every episode. We learned how much we are capable of in such a short period of time, to trust our instincts, and a lot about the ins and outs of television production.
Are there any other tour dates for VoicePlay? Where can people see you perform next? Do you have plans to release a collection of your music soon?
All of our tour dates are posted at www.thevoiceplay.com. We are also doing a special residency at Disney for the Holiday season at their “Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Parties”. We’ll be on the map at the Magic Kingdom event and are very excited to have been asked back again!
Look to 2017 for a new album.
Who are some of your favorite artists and what bands continue to inspire this group? Who would you all love to work with in the future?
One of the cool things about this group is that we all have such different influences and favorites. Rockapella, Take 6, the House Jacks, Nylons, and so many more helped influence the group’s sound. Individually there isn’t a genre or major musical influencer absent from our collective.
When you aren’t performing/working in the studio, what do you like to do for fun? How do you unwind from it all?
You’ll find Eli at the movies and spending time with his fiancee and their dog, Earl at the Gym, Layne with his newborn daughter, Geoff working on a home improvement project with his wife and their kitties, and Tony dreaming of dark and stormy nights.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
We believe that VoicePlay is an escape for our listeners. Whatever you’re going through you can always count on us to give you a little relief, laughter, and hopefully a fresh perspective when you tune back into your life. We always attempt to be an experience that the whole family will enjoy individually and together.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?
We have some exciting things on the horizon and we hope that you’ll tune into our YouTube or any of our social media sites to watch as things unfold!
