Thanks for your time today! Where does this interview find you now? What’s on tap for the rest of your day?
This morning I shot some content for MTV, then I went to a meeting with a new music producer, and then I laid the vocals down for one of my next singles. I’m also flying to Texas tonight for my friend’s birthday! It’s pretty much non-stop for me.
All Access Music is currently compiling a list of our artist’s favorite songs this summer so what has been your song of the summer? (It can be one of your songs!)
My song of the summer that I’ve been absolutely LOVING is Youngblood by 5SOS! Their comeback is so good and I love the whole album.
Overall, how do you think 2018 has been treating you and your career? What has been one goal that you have had this year and how close are you to reaching it? Or did you already reach it?
One goal for 2018 that I had was to be able to go on tour! And I’m super excited because I’m in the beginning stages of prepping my own headlining tour where I’d be performing and doing a huge meet and greet!
Growing up, was music always a big part of your life? Can you recall your first ever musical experience? Can you see yourself ever doing anything else?
Growing up I knew I wanted to be a singer and had dreams of becoming one. I remember when Frozen came out I wanted to memorize all the songs and perform them for everyone. I definitely know music will be a huge part of my future along with acting.
What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career? What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all?
Making music has been a lot of work. It takes time, hard work and dedication. I would say every day is a challenge to be honest… especially pouring your own real life experiences into your songwriting.
How do you think you and your music have been influenced by your hometown and where you live today?
Actually none of my inspiration comes from my hometown which is a small farm town in Michigan… I keep home very close to me but when I’m writing, Los Angeles and the people around me inspire me most. There’s just something electric about this city!
How would you say that you have grown as an artist since you first starting making music? What has remained the same?
I’ve grown so much from when I started music. I used to be a rapper and make more hip hop influenced music and now I’m completely pop & inspired by completely different people. I found my unique sound and voice this year which has been really exciting.
Let’s talk about your recently released singles, “Can’t Say No” and brand new, “Bad Lil Mama.” Can you talk about what was the inspiration behind these songs? How do you think they show the kind of artist that you are these days?
The inspiration behind “Can’t Say No” was my last relationship. The main meaning behind the song is doing something you’re not sure about and not necessarily being forced into it, but you are so in love that you Can’t Say No….
The inspiration behind “Bad Lil Mama” was just to create a fun song that you can relate to and dance to with all your girls. I wanted to create something that would remind you of how bad you are and that all you need is your girls and you’ll be happy.
I think both songs really show who I’ve become and the progress I’ve made in the last two years and I’m super happy with them.
How creatively involved are you with your music videos? What was it like making the one for “Can’t Say No”? It really showcases your dancing abilities!
I’m very involved whenever I’m making a new music video. In front of the camera is my favorite place to be and it’s definitely my happy place.
Making the music video for Can’t Say No was super fun and I got to choose everything from the location to the love interest to everything I wore. I also worked with one of my favorite choreographers Kevin Maher!
When do you hope to release more new music and a full-length album of new songs?
My goal is to have an album or at least an EP in 2019. It’s definitely a long process and I want to be completely in love with everything that I put out.
Your resume is very complex and busy so I am curious to know what do you find the most pleasure from – singing and performing, all the acting, the modeling, the commercials, dancing, etc? What would you say you are the best at?
I love doing what I do and I can never choose a favorite. I’m definitely focusing more on singing and my music career right now.
How do you think your past and present acting experiences have helped you be a better musician now? Would you say that they influence each other?
Though acting and singing are completely different, they both require lots of preparation and energy.
What do you think makes for an ideal show for you? What has been a favorite performance of yours so far? Do you have any upcoming shows the rest of this summer and into the fall? What’s next up for you musically?
An ideal show for me is having my backup dancers (4) behind me dancing and pumping up the crowd, throwing out merch & giving everyone a memorable experience. My next show will be in New York at Playlist Tri-State! I’m super excited and nervous! The next thing on my timeline is of course my Tour!!
We are currently living through a very trying and politically charged time right now so I am curious to know how your own music is reflecting this time period or is your music an escape from all that? Would you say that other musicians are making music that has been influenced by this climate?
There are definitely musicians out there who reflect the current political climate, but I try not to get too involved. Music and art is meant to be fun, and I want to keep my music something that people can listen to so they can escape hard times.
What has it been like keeping up with your social media accounts and all of the different platforms? Is it hard to stay up to date on it all? What would you say is your favorite way to connect with your fans now?
Keeping up with my social media accounts is honestly very hard sometimes. I like talking to my fans 24/7, but it definitely takes having to schedule times to be on my phone to make sure I’m always posting and interacting.
Who are some of your favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to inspire you and your music? Who would you absolutely still love to work with in the future?
My favorite artists and biggest inspirations have been Halsey, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé & Miley Cyrus. I would absolutely love to work with any or all of them one day.
If you were going to be stranded on a deserted island forever, what musical item would you take with you and why?
If I was stranded on a deserted island I would take a laptop with pro tools on it! I wouldn’t be able to not make music!
If your music was going to be featured on any TV show that is currently on right now, which would you love it to be on? Or if you prefer, what is a movie that you love that you wish your music was featured in?
I could see my music in the movie Sisters! It’s one of my favorite movies and my songs would go perfectly in the party/dancing scenes!!
At the end of the day, what do you hope your fans take away from your music?
I hope my fans take away happiness from my music. I hope they can listen to my songs, let go of all hate and anger and just dance..
