With active family lives and their various jobs, these guys remain busy as ever! Learn more about them in the following All Access interview:
Thanks for your time today! Let’s start at the beginning. How did In2ition first come to be? How did you all meet each other? Ultimately, why do you think you decided to start this band?
In2ition was born in 2011 from a vision to bring classic funk, soul, disco, and R&B to venues throughout the valley that, until then, had only featured other styles, such as classic and alt rock. In addition, we wanted to deliver an authentic sound and feel, with a live horn section; a rarity among local cover bands.
How did you come up with your name? Was it hard to agree on one? How long have you all been together?
We had batted around a few other names and decided to use “In2ition” for a couple of reasons…we originally had two female lead vocalists, and the name was not genre-specific like the other options. This has allowed us to evolve our sound and styles without being boxed in by a name that suggests a specific format.
Is it difficult balancing the band and all your day jobs and families?
Balancing the band with other responsibilities and commitments can be tricky. The key to our longevity has been scheduling gigs and rehearsals at a frequency that keeps it fun and novel. Maintaining a variety in our music selection and the venues we play has also helped to keep everyone engaged and avoid burnout.
Who are your favorite artists as a group? Who are the main bands that inspire you all musically?
WOW! Thats a tough one since we each have our own favorites, many of which we don’t cover with In2ition! I think the artists we favor the most are those whose music allows us to capitalize on our ‘big band’, high-energy sound. We cover such a wide variety that its hard to narrow down to just a few… our artist list here will give readers the best insight to our favorites.
Do you write any original material? Do you hope to eventually?
We’re working on it – stay tuned!
How often are you playing in and around Phoenix? Have you ever played anywhere else?
We typically play 3 public gigs a month in Phoenix metro area venues and about the same number private gigs. Here are some of the venues where fans can check us out.
What covers would you consider are the bands strongest ones?
We do a rockin’ cover of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary”, and a high-octane version of Elmore James’ “Shake Your Moneymaker”. Though we’ve played “Brick House” and “Hold On – I’m Comin'” since day 1, they alway fill the dance floor and the horns add a special touch.
What’s been the hardest part about getting gigs?
Scheduling – we normally book 4-5 months in advance. By the time some venues are ready to book a particular month, we’re already full.
What’s been a favorite show of yours?
Headlining the Glendale Glitters Jingle Bell Rockin Nights was definitely a favorite – playing for an enthusiastic crowd of more than 3,000 was a big rush!
