Meet Honey County! This hot new girl group just had their lead single from their upcoming album featured on an episode of the vampire TV show, True Blood! The song is “Blood From A Stone” and it can already be heard on KCRW in Los Angeles!
The band is made up of three extraordinarily dynamic artists who are a triple threat – they play multiple instruments, sing and write music! Danni, Molly and Whitney were discovered by talent manager Justin Goldberg (Grace Potter, Willie Nelson) earlier this year.
Amidst all the craziness right now, the ladies of this country band recently took some time to answer a few questions for me.
Check it out!
How did you guys all meet? Were you good friends before starting the band?
DANNI: I met Whitney first. She was introduced to me through a mutual friend who said her voice, writing, and guitar playing was like silk. He was right! (Thanks Jesse McLeod!) The next week our manager, Justin Goldberg, met Molly at a concert. He heard amazing guitar playing and saw a beautiful guitar goddess ripping solos. He called Whitney and myself the next day at 8am and told us that we HAD to get together and play!
MOLLY: We were in Danni’s kitchen in her apartment in the valley (LA). It was our first time sitting in a room together and getting to know each other, over taco’s. We had instant chemistry and after we played through a couple songs we all agreed that we should definitely be a group!
You were discovered by a talent manager. Where and when did that happen? Can you elaborate on that moment?
HONEY COUNTY: Justin has been known to have an eye and ear for talent. He’s best at developing acts and an incredible NO-BS manager – that’s why we love working with him. He loves our songs, see’s our potential and believes in us. We’re a team.
What’s been the most unexpected aspect of this whole experience so far?
HONEY COUNTY: As a band we’ve literally hit the ground running and we’re overwhelmed and grateful of how much support we have!
HONEY COUNTY: We’ve been in the studio at Pulse working on our new EP and the song “Blood From A Stone” wasn’t even finished yet when we got the call from TRUE BLOOD. We honestly couldn’t believe it, we are HUGE fans of the show and it was a dream come true! However, after the s-h-o-c-k, we were suddenly in panic mode because they needed it in a few days. We had demoed the song in Nashville with Maks Gabriel and had to take that recording, re-do the vocals on it add additional production and mixing at Pulse by Ryan Williams, and then rush it to mastering at Capitol/Universal by Bob Vosgien. The VERY next day, “Blood From A Stone” was spinning on KCRW in Los Angeles, it was nuts!
You are currently in the studio at Pulse Recording working on your debut album. How’s that process going? How close to being done are you ladies?
We’re close! It’s such an amazing experience working with the best of the best at Pulse Recording – we are grateful to Josh Abraham & Ryan Williams for their support!
HONEY COUNTY: We love playing “99 Bottles” live. Danni gets to rap about her favorite beers, Whitney loves to sing the line ‘all you redneck ballers!’ and Molly gets to play a dirty guitar solo! We really dig Soundgarden and love to play “Burden In My Hand” live!
Can you describe the music scene here in Los Angeles? Can you offer advice to groups just getting started?
We love playing in LA, everyone is so supportive and it’s a place full of opportunity and hustle. If you do what you love and go after it with everything you’ve got – you’ll see the results!
Who are some of your musical influences? Who are some of the new artists who inspire you? Do you guys get to listen to the radio much? Any songs you can’t get out of head right now?
We love listening to KCRW – Gary Calamar’s show is awesome, he’s so funny on air (AND he just put us on the air, thank you Gary!! You & Alice are the BEST!)
Right now, we can’t get out of our head “Cowboy” by Randy Houser, “Drunk on a Plane,” by Dierks Bentley, or “Summer of 19” by Dan & Shay, “Diamonds” by Johnny Swim – and of course anything by The Band Perry or Zac Brown Band.
Classic favorites- Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan, Allman Brothers, Alabama, Jimmy Hendrix.
How are you using social media networks and sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram to interact with your fans? How often do you post?
HONEY COUNTY: We’re on it all day everyday haha – hang with us! @honeycounty !
If you had the opportunity to work with any artist/band living or dead, who would it be and why?
We would LOVE to open for LeAnn Rimes (Danni opened for her in LA), tour with Randy Houser, Florida Georgia Line, The Band Perry, Zac Brown Band!
When you aren’t performing and/or writing new material, what do you like to do in your spare time?
MOLLY: Run and hike and eat REALLY GOOD FOOD
HONEY COUNTY: Whether its helping people get through a rough time or helping them to keep having fun – we just want to share our music who can identify with it and enjoy us!
