An Interview With The Multi-Talented Artist MIA MARTINA On Her New Track ‘DJ Saved My Life’ and More!

Mia Martina, the multi-talented and chart topping artist from Toronto & Miami, FL, just dropped her latest single, DJ Saved My Life. The classic and infectious Disco single, originally covered by InDeep, has a history of remakes including the popular one from Mariah Carey. However, Mia brings her own originality to the hit record, remixing Disco for modern Pop and Dance sounds. Mia worked with producer DJ Chino aka Breikthru on the smash and is looking to flood club speakers across the globe. She made her solo recording debut in 2010 with the global hit “Stereo Love.” The song was nominated for a Juno Award for Dance Recording of the Year in 2011. Soon after, Mia secured 8 gold records, 2 platinum records, and has dominated charts internationally all over the world.

Thank you for your time! So what does a typical day look like for you lately?
My pleasure. A typical day for me starts with waking up and giving thanks. I’m so blessed and I start my day with gratitude and meditation to keep me balanced. For breakfast I usually have a smoothie and on most days I try and get a workout in. Lately my days have been spent in a studio working on new music. My days are also filled with meetings with my team to go over the projects we are working on.
Now that we are in the latter half of the year, how has 2019 treated you? What are some goals that you have had for yourself this year? How close are you to reaching them or did you already? What are you already looking forward to in 2020?
2019 has been really good to me. I’ve surrounded myself with the best team and best talent. I feel like it’s been a year of building and getting ready to release new projects and setting up for a really BIG 2020. This year is the warm-up.
Growing up, how important was music in your life? Can you recall the moment when you decided that you wanted to be a musician? Was it an easy or difficult choice to make?
I have the most supportive parents that believed in me from a young age. They took me to all my singing lessons, music classes and really helped me to stay focused. I was singing from the time I was able to speak and knew this is what I wanted to do.
Was there ever a time when you thought about doing something else? If you weren’t a musician today, what else could you see yourself doing? Would you be as fulfilled in life?
I’ve dreamt of being a singer from the time I was a little girl and I’ve always been fascinated about how the mind works and what makes people tick, so I ended up taking psychology in school. I know that definitely prepared me for the music business lol ! So I’m glad my degree didn’t go to waste. I’m able to use that to really understand people and help them.

What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career? What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all? What has been the best part about it all?
The biggest surprise about the industry is how important the business side of things are. You can’t just write, produce and sing. As an artist you have to be very involved in the day-to-day and less glamourous things like accounting, contracts, revenue streams etc. The best part of being an independent artist (as I currently am now) is having creative control and being involved in the process from start to finish. There’s a big sense of pride coming from seeing your vision starting from an idea and bringing it to life.
Let’s talk about your newest single “DJ Saved My Life.” What was the inspiration for this track? Why did you decide to cover it?
I’m a big fan of the disco era and wanted to give an updated spin to a classic song. I’ve been working on this song for a minute and wanted it to be just right for the fans. The combination of vocals with Breikthru’s beats makes this the perfect dance floor anthem.
When do you plan on releasing more music and a full collection of new songs?
My new EP “Daydream” is coming out on November 15th and my full album will be out in 2020!
What has been a favorite show of yours so far? What do you think makes an ideal show for you?
Definitely Russia! Performing in front of over 200,000 fans was surreal and I will never forget it. The crowd and their energy makes for an amazing show. I love feeding off their energy and good vibes.
Where can people see you perform next? Do you have any upcoming tour dates scheduled yet?
I’m looking forward to a world tour in 2020 – so keep your eye out for dates!
How do you think you have grown as a musician since you first started making music? What if anything has stayed the same about your music-making process?
Experience is the biggest inspiration. I’ve loved, lost, gained and grown. I try to learn from all of it. Even the worst experiences can be the best teachers. My music-making process has been crazy lately – I’ve been creating some pretty dope songs in record time.
How do you feel about social media? What do you think social media has done for your career?
I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I love being able to connect with my fans and get immediate feedback on a song or get their thoughts on something. But I’m a really private person and don’t always want to share everything. I’m super thankful to have such a large platform and social media has definitely helped my career since my fanbase is so international – I’m able to share what I’m working on and see how the fans react.
What musicians would you absolutely still love to work with in the future?
Sade is my fav – would love to do a collaboration with her. She’s my Queen.

If you could design your dream music video right now, what would it look like?
I never stop dreaming and brought my dream to life for my music video for “Different Kind of Love” – I wanted to shoot it in stunning Santorini with these gorgeous dresses and I did. I’m excited for the next set of visuals for the new music and want to continue to shoot in exotic, beautiful locations.
What has been the best thing a fan has told you? What comment from a fan has truly moved you?
I get a lot of young girls telling me how much I inspire them to believe in their dreams and that I give them hope. There is no greater feeling that knowing that what you’re doing is making a difference and encouraging others to pursue their dreams.
Where would you love to hear a song of yours played?
I make music that makes people feel good – so anywhere that people need to feel good or need uplifting, I want it played there!
At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?
I give my all and put my heart in soul into everything that I create. I want it to make an impact and inspire people to follow their dreams, live, love and dance J
