If you’ve been listening to pop music at all in the past few years, then you’ve definitely heard many songs by Becky G! She first gained recognition in 2011, after she posted several videos of herself performing remixes of popular songs on to YouTube. In 2013, she released the video for “Play It Again”, which served as the first single from her debut EP Play It Again. The second single from that collection was “Can’t Get Enough” and it featured the rapper Pitbull.
In 2014, Becky G released the first single from her debut album. “Shower”. It eventually became her first solo charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single from her upcoming debut album, titled “Can’t Stop Dancin’“, was released later that same year. Her third single was “Lovin’ So Hard” and it was produced by Dr. Luke. She premiered the song at the Radio Disney Awards.
More recently, Becky G released the work out anthem, “Break A Sweat” this summer.
Learn more about this very talented singer in the following All Access interview:
Thanks for your time! How was you summer? What’s a typical day like for you now?
My summer was so busy! I toured Canada which was so fun! Every morning I wake up early, have coffee and get ready for what the day has in store for me. Usually meetings and studio! But with all the tours coming up there’s studio, press, meetings, rehearsals and trying to squeeze in time with my family!
You started singing when you would make Youtube videos. What first got you into doing that? What were some of your first uploaded videos?
I posted videos for fun, with the hope of sharing my music and story with people. I made so many cover videos to songs I was a fan of and also just fun personality videos!
What was it like catching the attention of Dr. Luke? Was that a surreal moment for you back then?
SO SURREAL! I couldn’t believe it. Such a huge blessing for me honestly. He’s so amazing and so is the rest of the team. I’ve learned so much throughout this journey.
In your time in the music industry, you’ve already worked with so many artists! What’s been a favorite collaboration so far? Who would you still love to work with one day
I’ve loved collaborating with everyone but one of my favorites for sure was Will.i.am. Just because growing up, I was such a big fan of him and his music.
What’s been the biggest surprise to you about the music industry?
That you never ever stop learning and it’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks it is.
I just read that you will be on the upcoming season of Empire! That’s so amazing! How did that all happen? Have you filmed your scenes yet? If so, how did it go?
Yeah I actually spent a lot of time out in Chicago filming. It was an honor working with the entire cast. They were so welcoming and loving. I learned a lot from everyone. I’m really excited for everyone to see it!
How do you try to be a good role model to your young fans today? What do you hope they take away from your music?
I’m the oldest of four kids. I have two younger brothers and a younger sister. My parents are also my best friends, so whenever I make decisions I ALWAYS keep them in mind and think of what would make them proud and what would disappoint them. I think that helps me keep a good head on my shoulders.
What did it mean to you to be able to perform at the Jenni Vive tribute concert? How did you get involved with that show?
It was so amazing. My family and I have always been a fan of her music and when her family reached out and asked me to be a part of the concert I cleared my schedule and made it a point to be there. I’ll never forget getting to celebrate her life with her family.
What are some of your favorite songs to perform live?
I love performing my song “Shower” because all of the fans scream it at the top of their lungs! I also love performing some of my rap songs. It’s a different side of me that my fans don’t always get to see.
What’s been your craziest fan experience? Generally, what are your fans like?
They’re so loving and dedicated. They’re one of the best things that’s ever happened to me because truth is I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for them and the love and support they give me. I haven’t had any real crazy experiences!
How do you think you have changed as an artist since you started performing?
I feel like I’ve learned so much about myself as a person. How to connect with people better. How to be honest with them and myself. I love performing so much.
Where are you happiest- in the studio, on stage or elsewhere?
I’m happiest at home with my closest friends and family, on stage, in the studio and Disneyland.
Where do you see yourself and your music headed in the next 10 or even 20 years?
I honestly don’t know!!! That’s what’s so exciting! I love entertaining and music so much. The cool thing about music is it’s always changing and evolving and there is always something new to learn. I’m so young and growing as an artist and person so it’ll be a surprise to all of us 10-20 years from now!
