An Interview With the Electro-Pop Duo THRILLERS!

With a touch of 80s pop, and an undeniable dance beat, “Slow Motion Replay” is guaranteed to carry you through the summer on the backs of breezy synths and killer vocals. It joins previously released singles “Can’t Get Enough” and “HEAT“, all off the debut full-length, Break Free, now out May 26.
Break Free also features collaborations with indie-pop stalwart Twin Shadow and gritty electro duo Back Talk. The album seamlessly combines elements of 80s nostalgia, contemporary R&B and indie-pop without missing a beat. It’s the debut album release from Lights & Music Collective, the masterminds behind the nationwide indie-pop dance party Dance Yourself Clean. THRILLERS just finished a national Dance Yourself Clean tour and have announced July dates in Sacramento and Seattle.

What are some words you would use to describe 2016 for you and your music? What were some of the highlights? What are you most excited about for this year?
Jeremy – 2016 was a testing year for us. The climate of our country at that time leading into 2017 pushed us not only musically but spiritually as well. We wanted to figure out a way to use our platform for positive means but not in a preachy way. It was also a very creative year for us being that that’s when we wrote the bulk of our album “Break Free”. The ultimate highlight of 2016 for me was seeing the unity of so many people from all walks of life, faiths and sexual orientation putting differences aside for love. I’m most excited about the release of our debut album “Break Free” available May 26.
Growing up, did you two always want to be musicians and be in a band together? Can you recall the moment you both realized that you could really make music together and be a duo?
Greg – growing up we both lived and loved music, we were completely surrounded by it. As kids we never really thought of being in a band, we were to busy playing in the woods pretending to be a band of ninjas. As we got older and fell more in love with music we both knew that the other sibling had talent. It wasn’t until Jeremy (my younger brother) graduated high school and I brought him a guitar for is graduation present that I knew we were meant to create together.
How did you come up with your band name? Was it a hard decision to make? What other names were you considering?
Jeremy – Everyone wants a Thrill, its these types of experiences that last a lifetime. We want our music to trigger that emotion.
I’m curious to know what it’s like being in a band with your brother? Do you find that you understand each other better and are able to communicate musically better? What’s the most challenging part about being in a band together?
Greg – being in a band with your siblings is the best thing that could happen in my opinion. It’s like we have mental bluetooth, we know how the other is feeling by body gestures. Also you can be completely honest, even if it’s not what the other wants to hear. The most challenging part I’d say is I’m not a morning person at all! and Jeremy is like the epitome of a morning person. So we have to find that golden time of day to create together.

Next month, you will release your debut album, “Break Free.” What does that feel like for you both? What was it like putting this collection together? What were some of the challenges of the whole process and the biggest surprises along the way?
THRILLERS – releasing this album feels therapeutic, exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. The making of this album was really fun and organic being that we created it amongst friends. Our biggest challenges along the way we’re making sure our vision was intact and obvious enough for the listeners but still grooves and evokes emotion at the same time. The biggest surprise out of it all in retrospect was how everything fell into place. It’s amazing seeing your works come together.
What was it like working with Twin Shadow and the producer duo Back Talk on this album? How did those opportunities come to you?
Greg – both were organic experiences,Twin Shadow and Back Talk are both friends of ours. We party together and always would say we should make some music together. Then one day it happened.
How was your latest spring tour that just ended a few days ago? What were some of your favorite venues and crowds? In general, what’s been a very favorite show of yours so far?
Jeremy – the tour with DANCE YOURSELF CLEAN was an magical experience. Being able to perform to sold out crowds in 14 different cities was exhilarating. We really can’t narrow down one show to a favorite. They were all special in their own way, but I really enjoyed Philly, Vancouver and Toronto a lot!
When will you head back out on tour and support your new album?
Greg – we have some really cool opportunities coming up that we can’t quite share yet. But we’ll be sure to keep you posted 😉 Stay in touch via social media for announcements etc.
Who are some of your favorite artists? Who would you all love to work with in the future? What would be a dream collaboration?
Jeremy – We’ve really been digging this guy out of New Orleans named “Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah” creating something called stretch music. It’s like jazz, afro beat, Latin, hip-hop and rock all in one. I think we’d make dope art together.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope people take away from your songs?
THRILLERS – we want to promote love, unity, happiness and a sense of fearlessness. As a duo we are very particular on imagery. We want to send a message of brotherly love (family or otherwise).
