An Interview With The Cincinnati Pop/Rock Trio, PUBLIC!
Meet the Cincinnati pop/rock trio PUBLIC!
Their track “Perfect” is a love song of sorts dedicated to the girls and women of today. With females having various messages and expectations thrown at them, telling them how to act and look, it can be truly damaging, especially to young girls that are still growing up and trying to figure out who they are. In describing the track, the band elaborates, “Obviously, there is no such thing as the “perfect” standard-so with this song we hope to communicate that girls should love who they are. That they should disregard and ignore what popular media says about what makes a woman “attractive” or “sexy” and to feel confident in their own skin, flaunting their own style, and not worrying about fitting into that box that seems to be defined by Twitter, Instagram, and the like.”

Thanks for your time! Now that we are well into the fall of 2016, what are some words you would use to describe this year? What have been some of the highlights for the band?
This year has been about new adventures. We have gotten to play a lot of college dates – always in front of a completely fresh, new audience. We love trying to win new audiences over, and that’s been a blast this year. Getting to play in front of large audiences with amazing artists like Matt & Kim, Daya, and American Authors was so incredibly fun. And the recent release of our single “Perfect” was a special event for us. This track signifies the start of a new era for us.
Growing up, did you all always want to be musicians? Can you recall your earliest musical memories?
We’ve all been playing music since our early teenage years and it’s safe to say we all wanted to make music our careers. For John (vocals/guitar) and Ben (drummer), it all started with watching live footage of Led Zeppelin in Ben’s basement, downing salt & vinegar chips and Jones soda. It was a magical time. For Matt (bass), it was first hearing the bass parts in Red Hot Chili Peppers songs while playing Guitar Hero as an adorable youngster.
How did Public first come together? How did you come up with your band name?
We played in the high school jazz band together. After practices, we would jam on Muse tunes and eventually started meeting up to jam on original material and things fell into place very quickly. Our band name is short and simple – we like that. By nature, it’s an inclusive word, like an invitation to hear our music without any preconceived notions.
Let’s talk about your newest released single, “Perfect.” Where did the idea for this song come about? What inspired it altogether?
“Perfect” is very important to us. It is a love letter to the women of today, encouraging them to not feel pressured to fit into the mold of a “perfect” woman according to social media and the entertainment industry.
Will “Perfect” be on a larger collection that you are currently still working on?
Absolutely. This is just the first of a whole batch of new songs. Working on a full-length album now.
Who are some of your favorite artists and what bands continue to inspire you and your music? Who would you still love to work with in the future?
All-time favorites include Maroon 5, The Killers, and Muse. These bands have a special place in our hearts. Lately, we are really digging DNCE – they are such a “band” and we will relate to the sound they are pumping out.
When you aren’t performing, working in the studio, what do you like to do for fun? How do you unwind from it all?
We eat a lot of candy. Matt is really into Twizzlers. John and Ben put away massive amounts of sour candy. Besides that….John spends a lot of time cartooning (check out his Instagram @jvcartoons).
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music?
Overall, we want listeners to identify with our music. We have very normal life experiences, and that’s what a lot of our music is about. Our fans know that we aren’t “too cool” and that’s often how we connect.
What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
They aren’t alone. We are probably going through the same stuff you are.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?
Just that we are so excited to keep rolling out new music for you. We are hard at work and we can’t wait to share!
