Q: Where does this interview find you today? Generally, these days, what’s a typical day look like for you?
A: A typical day for me consists of honing my artistry on a day to day basis. I try my hardest to stick to a routine schedule of everything that will sharpen my skills and keep me relevant in today’s competitive music industry. My schedule consists of going to the gym five days a week, rehearsing my current material daily, working on new creations as they come, and keeping up with social media. Oh…and don’t forget covers!
Q: Why does TopNotch Music fit you and your music now?
A: Topnotch Music fits my music well because it’s soulful with pop sensibilities.
Q: Growing up, was music always a big part of your life? Do you remember the moment you decided to be a performer? Was your family always supportive of this passion?
A: Music has always been a part of my life. Growing up around family members who were musicians built a curiosity of becoming a performer. Writing and singing music is how I learned to express myself and has always been a passion for me. I’ve been a self taught singer since the age of 12. I’ve had nothing but support from my family and I truly believe it helped build my confidence to be where I am today.
Q: What artists have consistently inspired you and your music?
A: I’ve had a many artists who have inspired me in many different genres of music. Inspirations such as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and Usher. You have to acknowledge the greats, learn from the greats, in order to be great.
Q: Tell us about the inspiration for your debut single “Crush”?
A: One morning I received a call from producer, R.K. Jackson. I was able to get my hands on a 90’s throwback style record to create a timeless track with co-writer Jimmie Alston. The actual concept of the song “Crush” derived from a trending topic of discussion on Facebook, woman crush Wednesday, a.k.a #WCW. Crush, being such a trendy topic and universal meaning gave me inspiration to write about my crush. Lets be honest, who hasn’t had a crush!
Q: What’s been like putting together your album, “Timeless”? What’s been something surprising about this process?
A: Putting together the “Timeless” album was a blast! I was able to experiment and show a wide array of versatility that I havn’t shown in the past. The most surprising part about the process was the chemistry that my whole production team had together. It was completely meant to be and made things smooth. My team is not just a team of producers, writers, and engineers, we’re family.
Q: You have opened for some big names like Jeremih, Mario and Lyfe Jenning. What tour experiences so far have really stood out to you?
A: I love traveling to different places and spread my music to new listeners. It was an eye opening experience that taught me what I do well with and what I need to work on. We always have to continue evolving and learning from others so it gave me a good opportunity to get up close and personal with ones who are doing it big.
Q: Who would be your dream duet and why?
A: Dream duet, I would have to say Taylor Swift. I love how she has grown as an artist over there years and shown her versatility as an artist. Plus I was told we would sound good together!
Q: What do you hope is the message of your music?
A: We all know that music has the tendency to revive past memories and also relate itself to someone’s life situation, whether its good, bad, happy, or sad. This is a reason why I love to share my current and past experiences I’ve encountered throughout my life. Making music that is “Food for the Soul” and writing songs that tell a coherent story will give my listeners a genuine and relatable feeling. The goal is to be universal and touch the world with my story. I want to make “Timeless” music that people can relate to for decades.
Q: Where can people see you perform live next this summer?
A: I will be having several shows “TBA” so please follow me on Facebook by searching “iambrandonmichael” for new music and touring updates. I would love to see you there!
Q: Would you like to share anything else about you or your music with our readers?
A: Lastly, I just want to thank all my fans and supporters out there for following my journey and believing in me. Also I would like to thank my manager Marv Mack, producers R.K. Jackson, Jimmie Alston, Goliath, Brian Gigerich, and Dre LeSean. It can’t be done without you!
