Jerrica Alyssa’s new single, “Ride,” is an infectiously melodic track wrapped in blissed out attraction and unduly anticipation. The musician, who studied at ARCT, Royal Conservatory of Music, has spent years pouring her soul into music through experimentation and songwriting. After moving to Nashville from Vancouver, she began touring the world in places like China, Japan, and Polynesia, as well as appearing in television shows including Canadian Idol and Variety’s Got Talent. But it was in the creation of her own sound that she discovered her voice — a voluptuous mix of pop, funk, and R&B that vibrates with sensual prowess and self-discovery.
“Ride,” is inspired by the intense anticipation of exploring the undiscovered, whether it’s a new person that sets you on fire or the dizzying furor of embarking on an unforgettable adventure. The funkadelic bassline is a retro throwback to 1980’s Prince, all earnest sexuality and vibing soul that keeps thumping right into the chorus. The layers of breathy vocals undulate effortlessly across the sparse instrumentation, bringing listeners into a psychedelic-meets-pop vibe with the simple twist of a melody. “Ride” is a golden sonic experience dripping in a glitzy pop-funk arrangement that demands a repeat listen.

Thanks for your time today! Where does this interview find you?
I’m in my private studio right now cutting picture on Final Cut for my new lyric video that I shot last night. I edit most of the stuff on my own, I love it!
Now that 2019 has started, what musical goals do you have for yourself and your music this new year?
I am working hard this year to release more music and reach more fans!
Did you make any new year’s resolutions?
Yes specifically I’ve made a goal to play better keyboard solos this year! So I’ve been practicing to take my keyboard solos to the next level.
Growing up, how important has music been in your life? Can you recall the moment when you decided that you wanted to be a musician? Was it an easy or difficult choice to make?
Ever since I was little my life has been about music & dance. I made the decision to focus on music as a full time recording artist, a few years ago.
It was a hard choice to make because I’ve held close to my heart my love for science, teaching, music and dance for years. I couldn’t let anything go.
Was there ever a time when you thought about doing something else? If you weren’t a musician today, what could you see yourself doing?
Don’t laugh but… Opthamologist, Genetic Researcher, Music Conservatory Professor, Polynesian Dancer & Performer.
What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career?
I wasn’t prepared for the emotional commitment in every moment. What I mean by that is I have to be emotionally open to express myself at the mic singing, when I’m writing, when i’m producing and in general, every moment of my life now. People just don’t talk about these things much. They seem to be busy going through the mechanics of it all.
What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all?
Thankful to wear so many hats; Music Production, Media, Marketing, all Visual elements, as well as the pleasure of performing. Never dreamed there was so much to do!
How do you think you and your music have been influenced by your hometown and where you live now?
I love my country, I’ll always be a Filipina Canadian. I’m thankful I have an opportunity to work in Nashville where the music community is thriving.
Let’s talk about your newest single, “Ride.” What was the inspiration for this track?
Ride is a melodic rhythmic funky track that is wrapped in attraction and anticipation. It’s inspired by the want to explore something new, whether that be a person or the excitement of embarking on an exciting journey.
Do you have plans to release more new music soon and a full album of new tracks?
Yes! I plan to release a new single every 6 weeks with an EP coming later in the year.
What has it been like keeping up with your social media accounts and all of the different platforms? Is it hard to stay up to date on it all? What would you say is your favorite way to connect with your fans now?
I think it’s really hard for all of us to keep up with our social media accounts! Some moments are so rewarding having direct contact with people that love my music. Then there are the crazy comments and the things people say, yet entertaining, but hard to believe at times. But truthfully, I’m doing my best to learn more everyday, as the social media opportunities present themselves.
Who are some of your favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to inspire you and your music?
Alicia Keys & Prince. They’ve always inspired me since I was young and continue to have an influence on the music I create today. Prince is all over “Ride”!
Who would you absolutely love to work with in the future?
My ethnicity is Filipina and truth be told, I identify with Bruno Mars as a person. LOL. And I love his music. It would be a thrill to work with him!
Where can fans see you perform next? Do you have a 2019 tour scheduled yet?
I’m playing out in Nashville in April and we are planning a short Southern US group of dates in the fall as well as my hometown Vancouver.
If you had an unlimited budget and your schedule was free, what would your dream music video look like?
My dream is to incorporate my dance background in a video with well rehearsed dancers and bop choreography. Numerous locations would tantalize the eye, with fast cuts keeping the up tempo song pumping. I already have a song written that would be perfect. Do you have the budget ready to go?
If you were going to be stranded on a deserted island, what musical item would you take with you and why?
Assuming we have a magical source of power, can I have a Nord Stage 3 with a decent keyboard amp? Or maybe a vintage Rhodes Suitcase?
If your music was going to be featured on any TV show that is currently on right now, which would you love it to be on? Or if you prefer, what is a movie that you love that you wish your music was featured in?
I would love for my music to featured in the nightclub dance scene of a romantic comedy. Let’s see, our cast could be JLo, Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling, & Bill Murray.
At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?
A great groove giving them good feels.
Would you like to share anything else with our readers about your music?
In the next couple weeks I have a new song coming out along with a Lyric Video & Live Performance Video!
