An Interview With NOVUL On New Music, Biggest Inspirations and More!

With past recognition from Billboard and MTV Hits, Novul is back and ready to open up the next chapter of her book with new singles and a new pop-alternative driven sound. Originally named ‘Novel’ by Grammy award winning Producer and music artist Poet Name Life of the Black Eyed Peas, ‘Novul’ has changed the spelling of her name to better match her artistry and new vibe in anticipation of her forthcoming music releases. Under her original name, she released a series of successful singles. Her debut single “Spark” lit up the Billboard Dance Chart peaking at #16, while the music video “Give Me Twenty” aired on MTV Hits. Currently, her single “All This Time” with Riveting Entertainment is in full-rotation on Canada radio (93.7 Wayne FM Hot Hits and KOOL 101.3 Hottest Music). More recently, Novul released her single “Boys Like You” on October 5^th.

Novul bulldozed her way into the music industry with the work ethics engrained into her since she was a child growing up on the farmlands of Saskatchewan, Canada. Despite growing up in a town with a population of 495 people and a family of grain farmers, Novul began her artistic career at the young age of 3 – performing all styles of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. She first took the stage as a singer at age 7, volunteering herself to sing the anthem at her brother’s minor hockey league game. With nerves pumping through her youthful veins, she had the crew turn the lights off in the rink, and became locally known as the “singer in the dark.” It didn’t take long for her light to shine bright as a professional singer though – as she graced TV screens by age 10, and at 13 sang for a crowd of 18K+ at a NHL Edmonton Oilers game.

With an itch to get into studios and further develop her sound, Novul moved straight to LA following her high school graduation. From there, she began working with Grammy Producer and music artist Poet Name Life of the Black Eyed Peas, and became the artist she is today: Novul. Now, at just 25 years old, Novul is an open book as an artist – with each of her singles and music videos showcasing a chapter of her life.

While it’s easy to read that Novul is outwardly expressive when it comes to her often emotive lyrics, electro-pop sound, innovative music videos, creative dance numbers, and fearless fashion statements – she also often puts pen to paper to express her support for LGBTQ+ rights. Novul has performed her music at Pride events in NYC, LA and Las Vegas. She’s proven time and time again that her upbeat tracks have the power to connect one-another, and let her fans know that it’s okay to be expressive and showcase their true colors.

Thanks for your time today! Where does this interview find you now? Is there music playing in the background? 

Thanks so much for having me! This interview actually finds me in my home Country, Canada, and I’m sitting beside a beautiful big window watching snowfall.

Now that we are on the back end of the year, how do you think 2018 has treated you and your career? What has been one goal that you have had this year and how close are you to reaching it? Or did you already reach it?

2018 has been great. I was busy in the studio creating new material and I shot 2 music videos for my singles (Boys Like You) & my new single (Amateur) dropping Nov 15^th. I am ending my year with 2 singles releases and video! I had a goal of releasing new music because I hadn’t released anything for my fans since last year and I actually got to release 2!

Growing up, how important was music to you? Can you recall the moment when you decided that you wanted to be a musician? Was it an easy or difficult choice to make? 

Growing up, I’ve always loved music. I grew up in a small town of 500 people, so breaking into music was difficult. Luckily, I had my family’s love and support. I was able to follow my dreams! I remember my first live television performance when I was 10 years old. I saw people respond to my voice amazed and I just knew from that day I wanted to do this full time.

What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career? What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all?

My biggest surprise is probably that dreams are possible! You can do anything you want if you put in the work! Small town girl now living in Los Angeles pursuing her dream.

How do you think you and your music have been influenced by your hometown and where you live today?

It’s definitely been an amazing influence! Our hit radio stations at home are supporting my music and people will send me videos and images of them jamming to my music. It really means a lot because nothing more exciting than getting home support!

Let’s talk about your newest song “Boys Like You.” What was the inspiration for this track? How do you think it shows the growth that you have gone through as artist over the years? What has remained the same? How creatively involved with the music video for it were you?

Relationships. Haha! Writing always helps me grow as an artist. It’s also my own therapy. When I write what I’m going through, and then I get fans (Novulties) responding with how they’re going through the same thing, it really shows me that I can be that voice for people. We’re all connected.  That’s what keeps pushing me. My music has grown sound wise too.  Before it was more EDM driven and now I’m leaning more towards funk/pop. I’m always pushing my sounds depending on my mood or feelings haha! All of my music videos I’ve written, but for “Boys Like You”, director Chancellor Warhol came to me with this concept. I just had to say yes! He totally understood me as an artist and my visions! Can’t wait for you guys to see my next video “Amateur” because it’s a continuation from Boys.

When do you hope to release more new music and a new album of new songs?

My next single, “Amateur” dropped Nov 15th!

Since the beginning of music, people have turned to it for support and as an escape from their realities. How do you want your music received and appreciated?

People are going to connect to what they connect too. Appreciate what they want to appreciate. I can’t tell them to love me or my music. All I can do is keep telling my story so that’s what I’ve been doing and so far people are really connecting to me. My sad / romantic relationships that I’ve been writing about. The thing is, I try to write very truthful and not hide what I’m going through.

What has it been like keeping up with your social media accounts and all of the different platforms? Is it hard to stay up to date on it all? What would you say is your favorite way to connect with your fans now?

I try to post everyday, but sometimes it does get tough. However, I remember that it’s my way of connecting with my Novulties. I would have to say Instagram is my favorite way to connect, especially because they have live now!

Who are some of your favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to inspire you and your music? Who would you absolutely still love to work with in the future?

I love Lady Gaga & Cher!!

If you were going to be stranded on a deserted island forever, what musical item would you take with you and why?

I would take a piano. Haha! I know it’s big, but I love the sound of a piano. Whenever I play, I get this warm joy inside.

If your music was going to be featured on any TV show that is currently on right now, which would you love it to be on? Or if you prefer, what is a movie that you love that you wish your music was featured in?

I would have to say 13 Reasons Why because it’s a popping show and I feel my music would sound great on the season!

Do you have any tour dates you would like to tell our readers about? How will you be spending your winter?

My next goal is locking in a ton of gigs for this upcoming year! My first show is January 10th at The Sayers Club, Los Angeles! Come see me!

At the end of the day, what do you hope your fans take away from your music? I’d like to know more about how you want your music to be timeless?

I hope what my fans take from my music is that even in serious hard times you can still have fun and groove. In the end, you need to love yourself and you don’t need any guy or girl for validation.
