Happy New Year! When it comes to your music, what are you most excited about for 2020?
DeepKutz: Happy New Year! We’re most excited for This is Halloween Volume 2020 which we’re dropping this fall. We’ve already written 20 songs for it and it’s going to scare your Halloween costume pants right off.
Norman Crates: But that’s not the only thing emerging from the lair! Stay tuned to our socials because #SpookyNeverSleeps and you never know when the next bloody bop is gonna drop!
Lil Punkin: Yeah, we surprise dropped a spooky Christmas song (Naughty & Nice) on Friday the 13th of December and people loved it! They thought we’d gone back into the coffins till next Halloween…
Can you recall the moment when you thought you could be in this group together? Do you find that your band name still represents you and your music today?
NC: We all met at a haunted house in LA where we formed a blood pact based on our mutual love of horror and Halloween music.
LP: We cut our hands and shook on it and LOVECRAFT was born.
DK: We have the scars to prove it.

Why exactly do you all love Halloween and where did this love come from?
LP: What’s not to love?? I think we all grew up with and or are obsessed with horror’s rena-séance of straight to VHS slasher movies with incredible soundtracks. And I know we all believe in creating what you love…and for us, it’s horror! I know my house was always haunted every Halloween, it’s my favorite holiday next to Dia De Los Muertos.
NC: I was literally Dracula every year for Halloween and still have the fangs to prove it.
DK: Don’t get me started…
Let’s talk about your latest song, “Straight to Hell.” How did this track come about? What was it like working with Kiernan Shipka on it?
DK: Netflix was looking to find a voice for Sabrina and reached out because they heard about some razor-sharp bops that a bunch of horror and Halloween obsessed music creeps were making in a laboratory on the East Side of LA. We sent them “This Is Halloween Volume 1” and they fell in love with our opening song, Skeleton Sam. They felt the sound was a perfect fit and asked us to rework the lyrics to fit the CAOS Season 3 plotline of Sabrina’s journey down to hell. “Straight To Hell” was stitched together like a frankensong and born into the graveyard! We collaborated with Netflix until everyone felt that we helped define Sabrina’s voice for this up and coming season. A horror dream…or nightmare come true!
What does it mean to you to be part of Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3? How does this show fit in with your musical/horror love?
NC: We see LOVECRAFT as the one stop shop for spooky music, so we were excited to help Sabrina find her voice for CAOS Season 3. It’s been an amazing partnership we look forward to expanding upon.
How would you say “Straight to Hell” prepares listeners for more music from this group? How does it compare to your previously released “This Is Halloween” Volume 1?
LP: Well, we actually did rewrite one of our existing songs from This Is Halloween Vol 1 to create “Straight To Hell”. If you listen to “Skeleton Sam” you’ll hear the similarity. A spooky bop with a throwback feel is Halloween Fun 101. That said we like to scratch all the surfaces of what spooky music is and can be. “This is Halloween Volume 1” will remind you of all the scars of Halloween music past. It cuts a deep wound of nostalgia while delivering the future horror music classics you and your kids will listen to for the next few decades. Dive deep if you dare!

Generally, how does this group go about writing your music? Do you write together or separately? What is the first step in your music-making process?
LP: We write like a seven headed blob in a studio filled and drilled with bone chilling Halloween decorations, it keeps us connected to the spooky spirit. Basically, we set up a writing camp every year in a crypt like basement studio in Highland Park (Lemontree, LA). We rent a couple rooms and randomly split ourselves between them every day. For TIHV2020 we booked 9 days and wrote 20 songs. We also sent out secret maps to a few additional collaborators this year.
NC: The crypt was more like a catacomb this year!
DK: Yeah, we opened up the crypt and included a couple more writers and friends (fiends?) that are equally horror obsessed and down to clown. Our main goal is to call upon the horror spirit with some fellow spooky freaks and go full on beastmode with the music…
I always like to ask bands if you all hang out socially apart from the music. When you aren’t working on music, do you guys hang out for fun?
ALL: We go to every Halloween haunted house, Midsummer Scream, immersive play and horror movie together on the regular.
DK: It’s a truly creepy crew who wants their reality to be Halloween 24/7/365 TDDUP.
With all the different social media platforms out there, how do you balance it all? How do you think that social media has impacted this band? How often are you all on your different sites interacting with fans? How have you been able to utilize it through the years?
DK: We love the socials and get so many amazing comments and support so keep em coming!
NC: #SpookyNeverSleeps and neither do we. So, we try to interact with everyone showing love and connect with fellow horror freaks!
LP: “Straight To Hell” was amazing because it exposed a whole new audience to what we do. I think we scared some people… we definitely saw lots of people discovering us through that partnership and we realize we’re not the only ones who are bloodthirsty for spooky bops.

What musicians have really been inspiring you all since you first started making music? Who would you still love to work with?
LP: John Carpenter
NC: John Carpenter
DK: …did we mention John Carpenter?!?!!!
LP: ..and Freddy Krueger
What do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope people continue to take away from your songs?
LP: BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID…
DK: Playlist them bops and rinse them outtt.
NC: #SpookyNeverSleeps
