Learn more about April in the following All Access interview:
Thanks for your time today! How’s your summer been going?
Of course! My summer has been pretty great so far. I can’t complain!
Growing up, have you always wanted to be a performer? Can you remember your earliest musical memory?
I’ve been singing and performing since I was about 5 years old. My whole family was very musical, so growing up in that environment, I kind of always knew music was it for me. I remember one of the first times I sang on a stage was at my church for a Christmas play. I was very young (maybe around 6 or 7) and I memorized and sang “Silent Night” in German. Looking back, I remember the bright lights, feedback of the microphone and cheering of the audience. It was all very exciting and new for me!
What artists have consistently inspired you and your music? Who would you love to work with in the future?
I listened to so many different genres and artists growing up, but a few of my biggest inspirations were John Mayer, Martina McBride, Celine Dion and Keith Urban. I would absolutely LOVE to work with any of these artists, but especially Martina. Her voice and passion really stood out and inspired me growing up.
Can you talk about being chosen by Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas Sr. to sing their song “Daddy’s Little Girl”? How did that all happen?
The whole thing was just an incredible experience. Kevin was looking for a female vocalist to sing this special song that he and Nick had written when Nick was 11 about a close friend of the family and he came across a Martina McBride cover of “A Broken Wing” I posted on YouTube. After hearing that, he decided that I was the voice for this song. I couldn’t have been more honored to sing such an amazing and inspirational song.
What was it like playing the Hard Rock Stage + Diva Jam during CMA Fest 2015?
Playing CMA Fest was such a crazy and amazing experience! I had always dreamed of playing a big outdoor stage and when I was told I’d be playing the Hard Rock stage…I was SO excited!!! Diva Jam was incredible, because I got to sing next to some of the most talented female artists in Nashville at one of my favorite venues, The Listening Room.
What made you decide to cover Carrie Underwood’s song “Smoke Break”? What about the song resonated with you?
As soon as I heard that Carrie was coming out with a new single, I couldn’t contain my excitement! When I first heard the radio premiere of “Smoke Break” I thought to myself this song resonates with almost everyone I know. We all work so hard at our day-to-day jobs or raising our children and providing for our families that sometimes we forget that we need a little break. “Smoke Break” is a classic Carrie song that really showcases her strong vocals. I really enjoy singing songs like that.
What do you think of country music today?
I think we are in a state of transition right now. People are realizing that we need more strong females in the country genre. We have a couple like Carrie and Miranda, but we need more. No offense to the guys…I love them, but there are so many talented up and coming female artists that are right on the brink of being discovered. I think we are about to have a great year of new music.
When do you hope to release your debut EP and what about a full-length album?
I honestly can’t wait to release new music. Right now I’m just gathering the right songs. That’s such an important part of the process. It’s all about the songs for me, so I’ve been doing a lot of writing and recording. I’m hoping to release something for y’all in the fall. 🙂
What do you hope is the message of your music?
I truly want my music to be a positive influence on people. I love to sing about things we can all relate to like growing up, falling in love, heartbreak, faith and hope. I want the listener to be inspired after listening to one of my songs.
What is the inspiration for your music? Specifically, how did your single “Fireflies” come together?
I’m inspired by everyday occurrences when I write music. A girl sitting all alone at a local coffee shop, thunderstorms, relationships…etc. I jot down notes all the time when I get an idea for a song or a song title. “Fireflies” was different because I didn’t write it, but when I first listened to it I immediately connected to it. It brought me back to the first time I fell in love. Nothing compares to that feeling and I wanted the listener to have that same experience when listening to the song.
How did you get involved with the Stacked Collection?
I had initially seen The Stacked Collection on Instagram and always admired their gorgeous custom bracelets. They made me a custom one that I wear ALL the time now. They are so fun and the people that work there are extremely nice. I would recommend them to anyone! I know Cole Swindell and a couple other country stars who wear them, so they aren’t just for girls! 🙂
What do you hope listeners take away from your music? Is there a general message you hope to spread to your fans?
I would like to evoke a general message of hope, confidence and love with my music and I hope that’s what people can take away from it. As I always say, music is a universal language that can touch the heart and soul of the listener. That is why I love what I do.
