Last night (Tuesday, January 30), the New York-based musician, Amber Mark performed to a packed-to-the-brim crowd at the Echo Park venue, The Echo. With barely enough room to stretch out arms to take photos, the mighty audience swayed and shouted praise at the 23-year-old German-Jamaican singer-songwriter. Wearing large gold hoops, a black skirt and a see-through black lacey top full of gold stars, she effortlessly serenaded the audience with her brand of smooth R&B and dance tunes.
How did Amber Mark first get started? Well, after struggling to find the right producers that really matched her artistic vision, she decided to write and produce all of her own music.
“The producers that I was working with at the time, a long time ago through mutual friends or whatever, it just didn’t work out. It wasn’t the right people,” Mark explains. It was a learning curve that let her realize her true potential. “Once I accumulated a bunch of sounds and learned how to use Logic, I was like, ‘Wait a second, I don’t need to work with any producers. I can do this on my own.” (Interview answer from Stereogum)
Mark’s debut EP, “3:33am” was released on May 12, 2017 via PMR/Interscope Records. During this show, Mark performed songs off that collection, including “Space,” “Journey Into The Unknown,” “Lose My Cool,” “Monsoon,” “Can You Hear Me” before ending the show with her catchy and uplifting track, “Way Back.”
She also sang an earlier single of hers called “Heatwave.” With this song, it’s incredibly clear that the singer has spent a lot of time traveling. In fact, she spent her childhood in Miami, New York, Berlin, and India. Indeed a lot of her music is influenced by all these different cultures; Germany’s house scene, Goan trance music and Brazilian bossa nova.
