Alt-Pop Artist OSTON Proves She’s More Than Just a 20 Something In New EP, Melancholia.
Los Angeles based alt-pop artist OSTON releases her latest EP, Melancholia which serves as the follow up to the 2021 debut album Am I Talking Too Much?
The 6-song project features the viral song, “Whatshisface” that started the momentum for the project earlier this year on TikTok where it had accumulated over 5 million views. What followed was the release of a collection of songs that take the listener into OSTON‘s journey through life, love, mental health and surviving her “20 something[s].”
Having collaborated with artists like UPSAHL, Bülow, JORDY, LØLØ for the EP, it’s clear through the lyrics and production that OSTON has shown massive growth in her artistry since the release of her debut EP, Sitting at the Kids Table in 2019.
All Access got the opportunity to catch up with OSTON on the new release where she provides a behind the scene look at Melancholia by answering questions about the EP with songs from the EP. Check out the full feature below and get to know your favorite new artist:
ALL ACCESS [Austin Bessey]: Which song took the longest to come together on the EP?
OSTON: Probably “Girl in the Mirror.” We went through a few different versions of the song and I kept falling out of love and back in love again. The original version had no bridge and ended with a down chorus. But after we spent some time playing around with it and built out the insane synth bridge section, I ended up writing alternate lyrics for the last hook that ends on a high impact moment and brings the song meaning full circle. Now I absolutely love it again.
AA [AB]: Which song almost didn’t make it onto the EP?
O: “Mouthwash!!!” I actually had a different song in its place ready to go to final production. I had a random session with Drew and Emily Harbakk that turned into “Mouthwash” and I literally couldn’t bear to keep it off the project. But I do hope the song we cut sees the light of day, too.
AA [AB]: Which song has the lyrics you’re most proud of?
O: It’s gotta be a tie between “20 Nothing” and “nothing about anything.” They both rip my heart to absolutely shreds.
AA [AB]: Which song were you most nervous to put out?
O: “Whatshisface.” It’s the sequel to “Lie About You” (which was also a hard song for me to release). But it was an awesome way to finally say goodbye & good riddance to the person it’s written about.
AA [AB]: Which song do you feel most encompasses the theme of the entire EP?
O: “20 Nothing.” Without a doubt. The evening we wrote it I came up with the entire concept for the EP. Melancholia wouldn’t exist or make sense without “20 Nothing.”
AA [AB]: Which song were you most surprised by after finishing?
O: “Girl in the Mirror.” I had a hard time believing in it for a while, but I absolutely love the way it turned out.
AA [AB]: Which song is about a real-life person that you can’t wait for them to hear and know it’s about them?
O: LOL. I wouldn’t say I can’t wait for them to hear it. I kinda hope they never listen tbh. “Whatshisface.”
AA [AB]: Which song do you see staying in your live show for the longest amount of time?
O: “HARD TO LOVE.” That song RIPS live. It’s just soooooo damn fun to play.
