Love was certainly in the air last night (Wednesday, February 14) during Kiwi-songstress, Kimbra’s, Valentine’s Day show in Downtown LA. The Ace Hotel Theatre was filled to the brim as the two-time GRAMMY® award winning artist put on a hour and half show that left the audience wanting more.
Performing many songs from her forthcoming album, “Primal Heart,” listeners experienced first-hand what the 27 year old’s newest project will contain. From thick synth-driven soundscapes to intimate and vulnerable melodies, Kimbra brought all of her bag of tricks to the table and left everything on stage. She was accompanied with a stage set-up of two large cubes which was home to her guitarist and bass player. These covered cubes were enclosed by a taught, opaque sheet with motion graphics being projected onto them, making for quite the trippy illusion.
Kimbra’s career was catapulted in 2012 after her collaboration on Gotye’s smash hit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Shortly thereafter she released her first solo album, “Vows,” under Warner Bros. Records. Such hits as “Settle Down” and “Two Way Street” came from the birth of this record. In 2014, she
released her second full length album, The Golden Echo, containing the 808 driven pop grooving “90s Music,” and soulful and intimate ballad “As You Are.” Since then, she has collaborated with various artists, all the while working on her upcoming album, “Primal Heart.” This will be Kimbra’s third full length album and has commented on it, saying this is her, “most vulnerable and honest record to date.”
In lead up to the April 20th release of Primal Heart, Kimbra has released three singles, “Everybody Knows,” “Top of the World,” and “Human,” and can be found anywhere music is bought or streamed.
The album was originally due to be released on January 19, with Kimbra explaining in a personal statement to fans via her mailing list, “Releasing an album has got to be one of the most exciting yet emotionally exhausting endeavors I’ve ever known. It’s like building a relationship with someone you are growing to love. In the service of the long-term relationship I want you to build with this album, plus a few final tweaks to make this music the very best it can be, I have decided to move the date to April 20th.” Read her full statement here.
