The Hollywood Bowl was full of smooth r&b crooners last Friday night (October 6). For his first time in 8 years, Maxwell played at the infamous LA venue along with Jazmine Sullivan and Raphael Saadiq who opened the show.
Accompanied by his seven-piece band, Maxwell performed songs off his critically acclaimed 2009 Columbia Records ‘blackSUMMERS’night’ album along with hits from his entire repertoire. He began his set with “Pretty Wings,” the lead single off that album. Then he moved into the other big single off that collection, “Bad Habits.”
He seductively entertained the Bowl with his smooth tunes and even smoother dance moves. “Let me take you to church real quick even though it’s Friday night.”
At one point during the show, he even boldy exclaimed, “For all the married people, grab your babies and for all the single people, we are going fix that by the end of the night!”
Maxwell took time to talk a little about the Las Vegas tragedy and the importance of gun control. He had all the lights in the venue turned down so it was all dark. He told the packed venue that tonight wasn’t about seeing him and or seeing us, it was just about the music. Soon after, he began
singing his crowd favorite, the Kate Bush cover, “This Woman’s Work.” It’s already already an incredibly beautiful song but Maxwell’s powerful vocals only intensified the song and it’s true meaning. He did eventually dedicate the track to the victims in Las Vegas.
During every song, it was almost impossible to look away from the neo soul-singer since he really got into every number. There was something almost hypnotic about his dancing and incredible vocals that made it difficult to look away.
It was interesting to hear him talk about his time in Los Angeles as a waiter and how he looks back on that time with fond memories and still loves that restaurant. He even shouted out to the crowd, “Thank you for my life!”
