“Dearly beloved we are gathered here tonight to celebrate a birthday.”
Last night, about 500 LA residents celebrated what would have been the legendary Prince’s 59th birthday by enjoying the incredible Prince tribute band, Princess. The concert was held at the downtown LA venue Teragram Ballroom.
Princess is made up of lead singers Gretchen Lieberum and Maya Rudolph. They perform Prince’s music with the help of of an incredible group of musicians which last night even included well-known musician and comedian Fred Armisen.
While Rudolph is best known as an actress and comedian on Saturday Night Live, she and singer-songwriter Lieberum have been making music together since the early 90’s where they met at UC Santa Cruz.
Princess played for about two hours and entertained the sold out crowd with hit after hit. They performed “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Head,” “Jack You Off,” “Sister,” “The Beautiful Ones,” “Controversy,” “Delirious,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Cool” and “Darling Nikki.”
In between “Cool”, the talented ladies sang the themes to Golden Girls, Cheers and Family Ties. And of course no Prince tribute show is complete without a sing-along to Prince’s iconic song, “Purple Rain.”
It was a touching end to an amazing night of Prince music. There is no doubt that the dearly departed artist would have loved the show.
Rudolph told L.A. Weekly back in 2015 how she got to meet Prince:
“Gretchen and I got to meet him the last time he played in town. And he gave us both these big, nice hugs, and he said that he had our performance on Jimmy Fallon recorded on his DVR.”
