To celebrate tomorrow’s (October 5th) release of Imagine—The Ultimate Collection (via Geffen/UMe), last night (Wednesday, October 3rd) the Grammy Museum was thrilled to host a special pre-release listening experience and discussion of the incredible new box set that explores the making of John Lennon’s classic 1971 album, Imagine.
Fully authorized by Yoko Ono Lennon, who oversaw the production and creative direction, the new collection is a truly unique expanded edition that offers a variety of listening experiences that are at once immersive and intimate.
“Imagine was created with immense love and concern for the children of the world. I hope you enjoy it,” says Yoko Ono Lennon in the preface of the 120-page book that accompanies the box set.
All Access had the pleasure of attending this special evening at the Grammy Museum. Remixed and remastered versions of this timeless and important album were played, along with unheard demos, outtakes, and video footage, from the making of the album.
The featured guests included original Plastic Ono Band member, Jim Keltner; director/producer of the Grammy Award-winning Imagine documentary “Gimme Some Truth,” Andrew Solt; DJ and longtime family friend of John and Yoko’s, Elliot Mintz; and Paul Hicks, the Grammy-winning engineer who mixed several of the mixes on the box set. Grammy Museum Artistic Director Scott Goldman moderate the insightful discussion. The panel shared details about putting this collection together and stories about Lennon’s recording process.
Imagine – The Ultimate Collection features brand new 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo mixes of the Imagine album, Singles, Extras and Out-takes from 1971, Raw Studio Mixes live in Surround Sound from the center of Ascot Sound Studios, minimalist Elements Mixes, the Evolution Documentary that explores the growth of each song from demo to final mix, and interviews with John & Yoko by friend Elliot Mintz. All in all, creating the Ultimate Deep Listening Experience for the Imagine album.
